Curator’s statement

Medellin used to be one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Honestly, it is one of the most freeing and magical places that I’ve been to. The city has a sense of community and amazing pride in their past and future. Medellin is proof of how art and community can make a change in society.

Things to do in Medellin

The Monumento a la Raza in Downtown Medellin, a large architectural sculpture with tourists standing in front.

Parque Arvi

To visit some nature and experience a Metrocable ride, you definitely need to check out Parque Arvi. It gives a beautiful view of the city and gives you a nice escape in nature. The main trail is very well kept and perfect for any nature stroll.

Comuna 13

Comuna 13 used to be one of the most dangerous communities in the world. Now it has resurrected into a community filled with art and pride. Check out one of the many walking tours to learn about and experience the lively neighborhood that is proof that art can change a community. When you are done with a tour, you need to grab a beer at a rooftop bar and experience the beautiful sunset.

Downtown Medellin

If you want to experience the local culture and see amazing sculptures, you definitely need to check out Downtown Medellin. You can see Fernando Botero sculptures throughout the city center. He donated these sculptures to the city for free because he wanted to use his art to help to make the Medellin community safer. You can experience Downtown Medellin with a walking tour or on your own, but I definitely recommend a tour so you can learn about the history of Medellin.

El Poblado

If you want to experience fun nightlife with a plethora of shops, clubs and restaurants, you need to check out El Poblado. It is considered one of the nicest neighborhoods in Medellin and the most popular area for visitors to stay.

Los Laureles

This neighborhood is pretty popular with expats and digital nomads. It is an up-and-coming neighborhood with plenty of shops and restaurants. It’s not as pricey as El Poblado.

Jardin Botánico de Medellín

It is a beautiful park for a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. You can experience iguanas and different types of birds. The park is organized in different sections based on the type of plants. Entry is free to the park but you have to buy tickets for the house of butterflies.

Guatapé

It is considered the second-most colorful city in the world. It is located 79km from Medellin. You can take a short TukTuk ride around the village and learn about the history. You can learn the meaning behind the colors and art of the buildings. You can get to Guatapé via bus, taxi or a guided tour.

El Peñón de Guatapé

El Peñón de Guatapé is the third tallest rock in the world with the most spectacular view. It is a hefty 725 steps to get to the top. Don’t worry — there is food and ice cream waiting for you there. It is located near the village of Guatapé. The easiest way to see and experience El Peñón de Guatapé from Medellin is with a guided tour.

Places to eat & drink in Medellin

Rocoto is a Peruvian Restaurant with great ambiance and a lush of greenery.

Yacky Chan

If you are in the mood for Asian food while you are in Medellin, you need to check out Yacky Chan. Yes, it has Jackie Chan memorabilia in the restaurant. It has great Asian cuisine ranging from ramen to sushi. The sushi was unbelievable. The staff is great and it's a fun atmosphere in the heart of El Poblado. You can take a fun picture with a giant panda bear during your meal, too.

Restaurante La Matriarca

If you want to check out a fun Colombian restaurant, you need to check out Restaurante La Matriarca in El Poblado. The food was excellent. The service was great. If you go in the evenings, you might witness a live band where you can do some salsa dancing.

Café Noir Bar & Lounge

This French-inspired café in El Poblado has a great aesthetic and elegant vibe with greenery around the lounge. It’s definitely worth checking out with a nice cup of coffee.

Pergamino Café Calle 10B, Medellin

This is a nice café in El Poblado. It's known for its atmosphere and great drinks. It has a great brunch menu. You can order coffee to send back home.

Restaurante La Causa Laureles

If you are in Los Laureles, you need to check out this Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant. It has a great cozy environment with a lot of greenery. It is known for its sushi and cerviche that you don’t want to miss during your visit to Medellin.

Rocoto

If you want to go to a fun Peruvian fusion restaurant, you should definitely check out Rocoto. There is more than one location in Medellin but you need to go to the Provenza location. It has a great ambiance with outdoor seating and plethora of greenery. You need to try the mango and passionfruit margarita.
