Curator’s statement

The bright lights of Tokyo sparkled before our jetlagged eyes as we stepped out of the Shibuya Hotel, perfectly positioned above the famous Shibuya Crossing. It was October 22nd, and the weather was just about perfect — a little overcast but not a drop of rain in sight. We had landed in Japan just hours ago, but the thrill of our adventure honeymoon was already coursing through our veins.

Day 1: Diving into Tokyo's Vibrant Heart

Dine in a restaurant with a maginificent view of the city of Tokyo.

After fueling up on a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we wasted no time immersing ourselves in Tokyo's electric energy. Our first stop? The serene Meiji Shrine and its sprawling imperial gardens, an oasis of calm amid the city's chaos. From there, we meandered through the trendy Harajuku district, soaking in the eccentric fashion and lively atmosphere.

As evening fell, we indulged in an unforgettable experience at Gen Yamamoto. This is a chic cocktail bar that serves up craft libations in an intimate, almost secret setting (be prepared to splurge!). But the true highlight was our 21-course sushi extravaganza at the acclaimed Sushi Tsu. Each bite was a revelation, meticulously prepared by master chefs. (Pro tip: Reservations are a must!)

Day 2: Onsens, Fish Markets, and Rambunctious Robots

Tsukiji Fish Market is a bustling seafood paradise in Tokyo.

We rose before the sun, determined to experience the legendary Tsukiji Fish Market. Alas, it was closed, but that just meant more time for a rejuvenating visit to a traditional onsen (hot spring). After a morning of pure relaxation, we booked a private fish market tour, which proved to be an absolute delight. Not only did we get an insider's look at the new market, but we also learned to craft our own sushi rolls like pros.

As night fell, we wandered through the glittering streets of Ginza before catching the infamous Robot Restaurant show (sadly permanently closed now). Yes, it was delightfully touristy, but made for an evening we'll never forget.

Day 3: The Majestic Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is Japan's iconic snow-capped peak.

A day trip to the iconic Mount Fuji was a must, so we hopped on a train and escaped the city's bustle. After marveling at the mountain's ethereal beauty, we checked into the traditional Yoshike Ryokan, where we savored every moment of serenity.

Day 4-5: The Ancient Charm of Kyoto

Fushimi Inari Shrine is an enchanting Shinto sanctuary in Kyoto.

Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, was our next destination. We stayed at the centrally located Kyoto Century Hotel, which served as our base for exploring the city's countless temples, shrines and markets.

A true highlight was the Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its seemingly endless tunnels of vibrant orange torii gates. While crowded, the experience was utterly mesmerizing (pro tip: go early morning for smaller crowds). We also wandered through the historic Gion district, where geisha sightings are still possible. We savored the best ramen of our lives at the unassuming Ramen Sen No Kaze (get there early to beat the lines!).

Day 6: Cycling Through Kyoto's Backstreets

On our final day in Kyoto, we opted for a unique perspective by joining a guided cycling tour through the city's charming backstreets and alleys. We pedaled past hidden gems, like the lively Pontocho Alley, and even stopped for a drink at the quirky Hello Dolly bar.

Tips for an Unforgettable Japan Adventure

- Invest in a portable WiFi device — it'll be your lifeline for navigating the city's maze-like streets using Google Maps.

- Exchange some currency before your trip to have yen on hand (your bank can help with this).

- Pre-plan your dining experiences to snag reservations at the city's hottest eateries.

- Consider a JR Rail Pass for convenient, cost-effective travel between cities.

- Don't miss the chance to experience a traditional onsen (hot spring) and a ryokan (traditional inn).

- For a truly immersive experience, dress up and join the quirky go-kart tours through Tokyo's streets.

While our time in Japan was brief, the memories we made will last a lifetime. From the neon-drenched streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, this country is a mesmerizing blend of ancient tradition and modern wonders. We left with our hearts full, already dreaming of our next Japanese adventure.
