Things to do in Marrakech
Shop for Local Treasures
The Souks: For many travelers, Marrakech is synonymous with exploring the city’s vibrant and sprawling souks. These are traditional marketplaces where Morocco’s rich culture, craftsmanship and history come alive. Traditional berber rugs, ornate metal lanterns, ceramic tagines, local spices and leather babouches are just a few of the treasures you can find in the medina's labyrinthine alleyways. For those who prefer a more guided experience, many hotels in Marrakech — such as the renowned La Mamounia (where we arranged our guide)—offer the service of a private guide. They can help you navigate the Medina’s maze, locate the best shops and teach you a bit about the history and culture behind the goods you’re buying. Many of the shops — especially those selling rugs and larger items — can help you arrange shipping your Moroccan treasures back home for you.
LRNCE: One of the more recognizable brands to come out of Morocco (retailing at the likes of Paris’ Le Bon Marche.) LRNCE was one of my favorite finds during our first trip to Morocco years ago. The studio’s beautiful pottery, textiles and artwork have a unique and eye-catching aesthetic. The duo behind the brand have recently also opened their own riad Rosemary, which I can’t wait to check out.
Beni Rugs: Offering meticulously handcrafted, made-to-order rugs and boasting collaborations with the likes of Athena Calderone and Flamingo Estate, Beni is truly in a class of its own. Request an appointment at their 8-,000-square-foot Marrakech studio / workshop to see their local weavers in action, design your own rug and enjoy a coffee from their Milanese-inspired bar.
Marrakshi Life: Another celebrated Moroccan brand. It is recognized by global retailers like Moda Operandi. Marrakshi Life is a Marrakech-based atelier and brand working exclusively with fabrics handwoven by their in-house team of artisans. Focusing on zero-waste and sustainable practices.
El Fenn shop: A good hotel shop is a rare find, and El Fenn’s boutique truly hits the mark. Offering a chic blend of Marrakech’s artisanal heritage with a modern aesthetic, with a focus on fashion and interiors.
Indulge in local arts + culture
Jardin Majorelle

Indulge in the rich spa culture
Marrakech is a city that has long been known for its luxurious spa experiences, characterized by the traditional hammam. These bathhouses have been a part of Moroccan culture for centuries, providing both a therapeutic cleanse and a ritual of relaxation. In Marrakech, the hammam is elevated to a luxurious art form. Many of the city’s hotels offer their guests an authentic and luxurious spa experience.
Day trips from Marrakech
Agafay Desert: Just 45 minutes from Marrakech, the Agafay Desert checks the box on your Moroccan desert experience near the city. A day trip is more than doable, but with accommodations like Caravan Agafay (by the incredible Habitas hotel group) and Scarabeo Camp, you’ll be tempted to stay overnight for the full experience.
Atlas Mountains: The Atlas Mountains serve as an awe-inspiring backdrop to some of Morocco’s most serene hideaways — with Kasbah Tamadot and the Berber Lodge being two of my favorites. Experience luxurious accommodations paired with the authentic charm of the region. Both of these retreats offer an opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditions of the Berber people who have lived in these mountains for centuries.
Places to eat & drink in Marrakech
Terrasse des épices (in the souk)
Situated on the roof of a beautifully restored riad, enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal or unwind from a day of shopping with a drink while enjoying panoramic views of the Marrakech Medina and the distant Atlas Mountains.
+61
A light and bright dining room loved by locals and visitors alike. You’ll find fresh, clean food inspired by the cultural diversity of Australia (blending the vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and South Asia.) This restaurant also has a solid wine and cocktail list.
Le Jardin (Royal Mansour)
Asian and Mediterranean cuisine might not be what the average traveler looks for in Marrakech, but Le Jardin at the beautiful Royal Mansour is a must-do. A more laid-back, open-air setting with tables set under olive trees, you’ll find a menu of small share plates, suitable for lunch and dinner.
