Ischia is the perfect destination to explore Italy without feeling like you are surrounded by tourists. Instead, it feels like you are truly surrounded by locals. It is beautiful, authentic and full of things to do. It's also larger than its well-known neighbor, Capri.

Things to do in Ischia

A coastal village with a grass-covered mountain in the distance

Ischia is a gem in the Tyrrhenian Sea, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, thermal springs and authentic Italian charm. As a first-timer, you'll be captivated by the island's lush landscapes, picturesque beaches and laid-back atmosphere. The island offers stunning views of the sea and gorgeous sunsets.

One of the best ways to experience Ischia is by taking a boat tour around the island. The tour provides an intimate view of the island's rugged coastline, hidden coves and crystal-clear waters. You'll pass by the iconic Aragonese Castle, picturesque fishing villages and natural thermal springs that bubble up from the sea. We swam from our boat to experience these thermal springs in the sea. Our captain stopped at several spots for swimming and snorkeling, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the island's pristine waters. Whether you're soaking up the sun on deck or diving into the vibrant blue sea, a boat tour of Ischia is a memorable way to see the island from a different perspective.

Things to do while exploring the Island of Ischia

  • Visit the Aragonese Castle — Explore this iconic fortress, perched on a volcanic rock connected to the island by a causeway, offering panoramic views and rich history.

  • Explore Sant’Angelo - Wander through this charming, traffic-free village with its colorful houses, boutique shops and stunning views of the sea.

  • Hike Mount Epomeo — Take a hike up Ischia’s highest peak for breathtaking views over the island and beyond, with a stop at the small chapel of San Nicola along the way.

  • Discover La Mortella Gardens — Visit these lush, subtropical gardens created by Lady Susana Walton, filled with exotic plants, water features and stunning views.

  • Take a boat tour — Circumnavigate the island on a boat tour, stopping at hidden coves, snorkeling spots and the beautiful Maronti Beach.

  • Enjoy Forio’s historic enter — Stroll through the streets of Forio, known for its charming old-town, churches and beautiful sunset views from the Chiesa del Soccorso.

  • Visit the beaches — Relax on some of Ischia's most popular beaches, such as Maronti Beach, Citara Beach and Spiaggia dei Pescatori.

  • Explore Ischia Ponte - Wander through this historic district, with its narrow streets, artisan shops and views of the Aragonese Castle.

  • Wine tasting — Visit a local vineyard to sample Ischia’s famous wines, like Biancolella and Forastera, and learn about the island's winemaking traditions.

  • Attend a festival — If your visit coincides with one of the island’s many festivals, such as the Festa di Sant’Anna in July, join the local celebrations for a truly authentic experience.

These activities will give you a well-rounded experience of Ischia's natural beauty, cultural heritage and laid-back lifestyle.
