Things to do in Sydney

Four days are just enough to taste the city's essence, but be prepared to be tempted to linger! Sydney is best explored at a leisurely pace, allowing you to soak in the sights, sounds, and flavors of this vibrant city. It also serves as a fantastic jumping-off point for any trip to Australia.

Explore Sydney from the Water

Take the Ferry to Manly Beach: Take to the water and enjoy a scenic ferry ride from Circular Quay to Manly, soaking in iconic sights like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Wander Manly's Corso, a bustling seaside promenade, before sinking your toes into the golden sands of Manly Beach.

From Manly Beach, wind your way around to Shelly Beach, a hidden gem with turquoise waters and vibrant marine life. Stop for a swim or grab a table at The Boathouse, one of Manly’s great eateries.

Get wild at Taronga Zoo: Catch a ferry for a unique perspective of the city and enjoy spectacular panoramas from Taronga Zoo, home to fascinating creatures from Down Under and beyond.

Luna Park: You can either admire Sydney’s Luna Park from a distance or take a ferry across the harbour for some hours of fun. It's an ideal choice for families with kids. Luna Park Sydney offers a nostalgic harbour front adventure with its iconic grinning face, thrilling rides like the Boomerang coaster and classic games such as dodgem cars and Coney Island sideshows, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all.

Darling Harbour: Families with younger kids will love the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, Wild Life Sydney Zoo and Darling Harbour Children's Playground. Get there via a quick ferry ride from Circular Quay.

The Rocks: Discover Sydney's heritage in The Rocks, where colonial pathways and buildings echo the city's past. Immerse yourself in vibrant art galleries featuring Aboriginal and contemporary pieces. Explore quaint shops and historical landmarks like Cadman's Cottage and the Susannah Place Museum.

Experience Iconic Sydney

The Opera House: Marvel at the architectural wonder of the Sydney Opera House, Take a tour, enjoy a performance, or simply admire its beauty from afar. The Opera House stands as one of Sydney's most iconic landmarks, guaranteed to leave you awestruck. Be sure to take a moment to sit and enjoy the panoramic views from the Opera Bar, located below the Opera House. Indulge in a cold beer or a glass of champagne as you soak up the sights and sounds of Sydney Harbour.

Sydney Harbour Bridge: For an adrenaline rush, conquer the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, and ascend to dizzying heights for unparalleled city vistas. If you're looking for a truly unforgettable experience, the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is a must-do.

Explore Sydney's Eastern Suburbs: Embrace the coastal charm. Lace up your shoes for the Bondi to Coogee Walk, a scenic coastal journey traversing stunning beaches like Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama.

  • This is a 3.1 mile out and back trail that hugs the coastline.

Bondi Beach is one of Australia's most iconic beaches, attracting sun-seekers looking to bask on its soft sands and surfers of all skill levels to its legendary waves. Beyond its sandy shores, Bondi boasts a vibrant cafe and dining scene. Stroll along the bustling Campbell Parade and explore trendy boutiques and charming cafes, each contributing to Bondi's eclectic charm. At the beginning of the Bondi to Bronte hike, you'll pass by the heritage-listed Bondi Icebergs and the iconic ocean pool below.

Art & Culture Fix: Dive into the world-class art scene at the Art Gallery of New South Wales or the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Sydney is home to some of the best art galleries in the world, so make sure to take some time to explore them.

Wander through the Royal Botanic Gardens for a vibrant dose of nature, or explore the maritime history at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Shopping

Paddington: Wander along Oxford Street, William Street and Glenmore Road (near the Oxford Street end) for boutique designer stores.

Pitt Street Mall & The Queen Victoria Building: Explore chain stores and big department stores. Also consider Bondi Junction Westfield.

Bondi: Visit Gould Street for a range of boutique stores.

Markets: If wandering through markets is your thing, here are a few options:

  • The Rocks Market: Held every weekend, with Fridays dedicated to Foodies and Saturdays and Sundays offering unique handmade treasures. Additionally, there's a fantastic Christmas market in December.

  • Paddington Markets: Located on Oxford Street in Paddington, open every Saturday. Here, you'll discover stalls featuring local fashion designers, makers and artists.

  • Manly Corso Markets: Open every weekend on Saturdays and Sundays, featuring an array of arts and crafts.

  • Bondi Markets: Saturdays feature fresh produce, while Sundays are dedicated to up-and-coming designers and makers. It's a great spot to mingle with locals at Australia’s most famous beach.

Day Trips

One of my personal favorite areas to explore out of the city is Palm Beach.

Palm Beach: Palm Beach is a 90-minute drive north of the city, situated on Sydney’s northern beaches. However, the more spectacular, scenic and quicker option is to jump aboard a seaplane from Sydney Harbour.

Upon arrival, savor lunch at the famed Boathouse Palm Beach or a nearby eatery. Take a leisurely stroll by the water, tee off at the adjacent Palm Beach Golf Course, or hike to the historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Cool off with a dip in the Pacific Ocean or simply unwind and enjoy the serene ambiance.

If you are looking to head away from the coast, look no further than the Blue Mountains.

Blue Mountains: The Blue Mountains is about an hour's drive from Sydney and is known for their stunning natural beauty, offering great hiking through the Blue Mountains National Park, cable car rides and the opportunity to explore the small mountain towns.

Manly

The Boathouse Shelly Beach: Situated on Manly’s Shelly Beach, The Boathouse is the ultimate destination from sunrise to sunset. Open from 7:00 am until late with a relaxed atmosphere, it welcomes all, whether you're rolling in straight off the beach or arriving dressed for the occasion. Indulge in coastal-inspired dishes while soaking in the seaside ambiance.

The Rocks

The Tea Cosy: No visit to The Rocks is complete without a visit to The Tea Cosy, where you'll find freshly made ‘scones and tea like nanna used to make’. Located in one of Sydney's beautiful heritage-listed buildings, this charming spot is a true hidden gem.

Opera House

Opera Bar: Situated right on the water's edge at Circular Quay, it boasts stunning panoramic views of the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Harbour. Imagine sipping on a cocktail or cold beer while enjoying this breathtaking scenery!

Sydney Harbour

If fine dining is more your style or you're looking for somewhere to celebrate, look no further than:

Quay Restaurant: A renowned locale featuring views of Sydney Harbour along with innovative tasting menus.

Aria Restaurant: Chef Matt Moran presents modern Australian haute cuisine in an elegant, glass-walled dining room overlooking Circular Quay.

Be sure to book well in advance for both.

Bondi

Totti’s: Totti Restaurant is your go-to destination for casual Italian dining. Sit in our courtyard surrounded by olive trees while enjoying simple, delicious food meant to be shared. Indulge in dishes from their charcoal oven, such as wood-fired bread and locally sourced, house-made antipasto. Complement your meal with retro-Italian-inspired drinks or an organic wine.

Palm Beach

Barrenjoey House: Barrenjoey House offers a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience, serving a modern Australian menu with a strong emphasis on fresh, seasonal seafood dishes. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. Book ahead.

Jonah’s: At Jonah’s, you'll enjoy breathtaking views from its clifftop perch overlooking Whale Beach, providing stunning vistas of the ocean. Indulge in award-winning cuisine featuring contemporary Australian dishes crafted with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Reservations are a must.

CASA by The Boathouse

  • Sister restaurant to the Boathouse at Shelly Beach, Manly & Barrenjoey House.

CASA by The Boathouse: Serves breakfast, coffee and an all-day Italian-inspired menu. It provides a family-friendly, casual Italian dining experience where everyone is welcome, whether coming straight off the beach or dressed up for the occasion.

Australia is renowned for its exceptional coffee scene, boasting an abundance of excellent coffee shops. Australian cafes excel at providing delicious sit-down breakfasts, and while it may be considered cliché, trying the avocado toast is a must during your visit.
