Luxembourg is a small, landlocked European country known for its wealth, medieval old town and status as a global financial hub.
Curator’s statement

Known for being a small but wealthy country, Luxembourg is a popular day destination spot. While I also only had a day to explore, I wish I had spent a long weekend exploring all this country has to offer.

Things to do in Luxembourg

A plaza with historic buildings at the edges and an elevated statute of a man on a horse.

Descend below the city and explore the Pétrusse Casemates to learn all about the various uses for the city's fortifications.

Enjoy a walking tour of the city to learn some history and hit the key spots.

Hike along the Alzette River. There is a beautiful trail along both sides of the river, perfect for hiking or running. Part of it is paved, and part is a path through the woods. I entered via Kaltreis Park.

Visit the Luxembourg City History Museum to learn more about this fascinating country—there's a reason residents speak four languages!

Wander through Parcs de la Pétrusse. This park follows the river through the valley between each side of the city, offering a unique perspective. Look out for the Statue Melusina, the mysterious wife of the founder of the city of Luxembourg!

Places to eat & drink in Luxembourg

Luxembourgish cuisine

Bistrot de le Presse: This spot faces the Palais Grand-Ducal, so you feel fully immersed in Luxembourg while sampling the local cuisine.

Restaurant Um Dierfgen: This restaurant serves Luxembourgish specialties. I had the local Battin beer and Wäinzoossis mat Môschterzooss, a sausage in mustard and wine sauce.

Dinner

Beet: This plant-based restaurant has a prime location on Place Guillaume II.

Flow: An upscale Mediterranean spot serving a modern twist on Greek classics.

Stazione: This chic Italian restaurant sits above Place de Paris for prime people watching. I still dream about their smoked burrata pasta.

Need to know

While prices are in line with other major European cities, and the perception of being expensive tends to be a deterrent, there are various free things to do, plus public transportation and restrooms are free. Luxembourg is an extremely important country that is often overlooked, but I would recommend it for those spending extended time in Europe. After all, it is where the European Union was founded!
