Things to do in Edinburgh

  • Princes Street Gardens: Walk through these lovely gardens for a peek at local life and relaxation. If you're visiting in spring or summer, you'll see several creative flower arrangements serving as works of art. Find a comfy, grassy spot and enjoy your surroundings for a bit. Close your eyes, notice the breeze and hopefully grab a ray of sunshine, what a great way to ground yourself in the city as you're just arriving!

  • Ross Fountain: Located in the Gardens, this beautiful fountain is made of cast iron and was installed in the late 1800s. Will Ferrell fans will recognize it from his Netflix hit, Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga

  • Greyfriar's Bobby & Tom Riddle's Grave: Embrace some of Edinburgh's quirkier traditions with a quick walk through this historic cemetery. Leave a stick for the very good boy who refused to leave his owner's side after his death and hunt down the grave of the real-life Tom Riddle.

  • Tour Edinburgh Castle: Rise early to beat the crowds, but allow a few hours to make your way through the expansive campus. Audio and guided tours can be purchased, but the booklet that comes with your ticket provides a pretty deep dive into the monarchies that ruled over Scotland throughout the centuries and their tumultuous lives.

  • Scenic Walk through Old Town: There are many ways to see the beautiful stone buildings and historic row houses, but would recommend starting at Dean Village. Take the waterside walkway through to Circus Lane. Continue to Calton Hill, take the steep climb to the top for a swoon-worthy view of the city and a snack and cocktail at the Lookout by Gardener's Cottage. Climb down and walk through The Royal Mile, popping in and out of any shops that catch your eye. Don't forget to stock up on wool plaids and cashmere! Finally, catch a thrill with a stroll or tour through Mary King's Close.

  • Scotch or Gin Distillery Tour: Even if you're not a big drinker, you can't leave Scotland without learning about the history and skill of Scotch-making. A tour from The Scotch Whiskey Experience provides and in-depth tutorial on the regions of Scotland, the differences in scotch whiskeys from each area and even a brief but adorable museum ride ending in your very own tasting.

Places to eat & drink in Edinburgh

  • The Outsider: This place lives in my heart as my introduction to gin & sodas with orange. But it deserves all its praise for comforting dishes in a laidback setting. Ask for a spot near the windows for beautiful views of Edinburgh Castle.

  • The Pantry: Simple and modern, a great spot for breakfast.

  • The Elephant House: Visions of a certain boy wizard were inspired here. Grab a coffee and cake from this writer's haven.

  • Forage & Chatter: Fine dining meets foraging in this intimate and whimsical restaurant. Tip - makes a great pit stop on the way to Dean's Village.

  • Chez Jules: Edinburgh mainstay, unpretentious French bistro.

  • Bramble: Serves elevated cocktails in an intimate space.

  • Panda & Son's: One of the world's best bars. This eclectic speakeasy is just as much a show as a cocktail bar. Serves inventive drinks with flourish! Reservations highly recommended.

  • Nauticus: Nautically inspired pub serving upscale cocktails with great service and staff.

  • The Kitchin: A highlight of our gastronomic adventures in Edinburgh. Chef Tom Kitchin and his lovely team have a Michelin Star. They highlight the best of Scottish cuisine, paired perfectly with approachable but delicious wines for each course.

Need to know

Scotland's geography makes it vulnerable to cloudy skies and cold breezes, so dress warmly. Even in summer, a jacket is recommended for cold mornings. Practical shoes are a must for navigating through the hills and cobblestone streets.
