Curator’s statement
Five days in Italy is never enough, but I’ve planned layovers just so I can have lunch in Rome. If you can only sneak away for 5 days, it is a perfect amount of time for a quick trip to the stunning Amalfi Coast, the epitome of “La Dolce Vita.” For the savvy traveler on a tight schedule, here's the pro move—fly in and out of Naples. It's quicker than Rome, setting you up for an efficient yet stellar exploration of this coastal paradise. There are many wonderful accommodation options, so depending on which town you choose to stay in, you may want to shift the days of this itinerary. This trip covers the best of the cliffside mountains and the gorgeous coast.✈️

Day 1: Arrive in Naples/Tour Pompei and Agerola
Once you arrive in Naples, head to an early lunch at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele for some exquisite Napolitan pizza. If you are a history buff (or even if you aren’t!), detour to the meticulously preserved ancient city of Pompeii on your route to the coast. The archaeological site presents an awe-inspiring glimpse into the past.
Consider then heading to the lesser-known gem of Agerola. The first time I went to Italy, I was with my Italian American grandmother, and we thought we had found her father’s hometown in Agerola (Spoiler: It turned out not to be true, but that’s a tale for another day). Agerola is this charming, tucked-away town where time seems to stand still. Picture this: elderly gentlemen playing chess in the piazza, the priest shooting the breeze with the locals—it's like living in a movie scene. Tucked up in the mountains, Agerola serves up killer views of the water. It is also close to the famous “Path to the Gods” hike. Something to take note of if you are a hiking enthusiast! If you are looking for something off the beaten path, this is the place for you.
Day 2: Amalfi
At the top of the hill at the end of the main road through Amalfi, there is a lovely Lemon Farm. Spend the morning touring the beautiful rustic grove set into the cliffs of the mountains. It is out of the hustle and bustle of the busy town below. Be sure to take in the peaceful waterfall nearby before departing.
On your way down the hill, stop for a late lunch at Ristorante Miseria e Nobilta for a casual, but incredible meal (my personal favorite- grilled octopus in a tomato chili broth!) Stop in some of the charming shops and check out the beautiful Duomo di Amalfi on the piazza. The cathedral features a stunning blend of architectural styles, including Arab-Norman and Gothic influences, making it a must-visit attraction.
When you make it back to the water, go for a swim at Hotel Luna. The pools are built into the rocky terrain and have access to the sea. It’s private and quiet compared to the nearby beaches! A noteworthy aspect is the presence of a charming Italian gentleman named Pepe who oversees operations. Be warned— he might just end up becoming your best mate.
Day 3: Day trip to Capri
Taking a day trip to Capri is a must. Capri is a little island about 20 miles away from Amalfi, about 10 miles from Sorrento. It is a bit of a tourist mecca, so best to go in the shoulder seasons if you can. It’s probably most well-known for its Blue Grotto, a natural sea cave adorned in ethereal shades of blue. After you check it out, head to the lovely Beach club, La Canzone Del Mare, for spaghetti prepared at the table in a parmesan wheel (a life-changing meal indeed!) Afterwards, go for a dip in their rocky sea pools.
Take the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro for panoramic views that'll make your Instagram followers jealous. Before heading back to your hotel, wander through the charming streets of Capri Town– a picturesque setting adorned with chic boutiques, inviting cafes, and gelato parlors—a scene reminiscent of an idyllic Italian postcard.
Day 4: Boat Tour and Cooking Class in Positano
Following yesterday's excursion, satisfy your longing for the sea with a private boat tour along the coast. Explore the charming towns of Atrani, offering a picturesque setting reminiscent of a Gray Malin photograph, Conca dei Marini, and Praiano. Make a noteworthy stop at the Fjord in Furore for a dramatic photo backdrop. Conclude your maritime journey in Positano, where the afternoon unfolds with a cooking class at Casa Mele. Indulge in the art of preparing regional specialties, pairing your dishes with exceptional wines for a delightful culinary experience. End your evening with drinks at Franco’s bar at Le Sirenuse.
Day 5: Ravello
Ravello is a charming town set in the hills, looking down on Amalfi and the sea. It’s a little slice of heaven. The views are unbeatable. Begin your journey at the enchanting Villa Rufolo, a historic mansion with beautiful gardens and breathtaking views. It's like stepping into a fairy tale. The Infinity Terrace at Villa Cimbrone offers a breathtaking panorama, providing an ideal vantage point to absorb the beauty of Ravello. Explore the Duomo di Ravello, a cathedral with intricate architecture and a serene atmosphere. Enjoy sweeping views at Ristorante Belvedere at Belmond Caruso for a lovely dining experience before heading back to your hotel for your last night.
