Curator’s statement
My heritage includes some Dutch, and when I married my Dutch husband, it immediately became a must-do destination for us! Amsterdam was one of our favorite trips to date. The culture, canals, museums and the food all matched our vibe. In general, Amsterdam is very relaxed, inclusive, has easy public transport and is so walkable.

Things to do in Amsterdam
Museums
As a first time in Amsterdam, you've probably researched what to do and everything says go to the Anne Frank House, VanGogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. However, if you're not into art museums (like me) there are other options!
The Verzetsmuseum - Museum of WWII Resistance is all about the response of the civil Dutch population to the occupation by the Nazi-regime. Take the time to walk through, watch the videos and listen to the audio tour. It has some interactive exhibits and presents true stories and artifacts from those who lived the event.
Willet-Holthuysen Museum - When you see the beautiful canal houses as you walk around, you may wonder why it's like inside. The Willet-Holthuysen gives you a look into a canal house with period rooms from the 17th century. Every six months they have a new contemporary exhibit that is blended with the 17th century period rooms. There is also a beautiful French style garden available to walk through.
Note: This is not wheelchair or mobility scooter friendly due to the historic nature of the building.
KattenKabinet (Cat Cabinet) - This museum is dedicated entirely to artwork featuring cats and has cats wondering the museum. It is a small museum, but if you're missing your furry friend back home, it's a great way to get a quick fix.
Parks/Neighborhood
Vondelpark - For a break from the city, head to Vondelpark for a peaceful oasis. There is a large pond in the center of the park and June to August there are music and dance performances in the open-air theater. There are also several statues to see while you take the paths through the park.
Westerpark - While also a beautiful park to walk through, there's lots to do once you're in that neighborhood! The first Sunday of every month there is a market hall that is filled with stalls, food trucks, live bands, and shopping.
Canal Tour
This is a must! Depending on the time you have available and the level of service you want, there are so many options to choose from.
A'dam Tower
For a view of all of Amsterdam, catch a ferry to the A'dam Tower. There is a observation deck with a swing over the edge, if you're feeling adventurous, and lots of photo ops.
Day Trips:
Alkmaar - If you're in Amsterdam April to September, there is a cheese market every Friday. While you're there, check out the Cat Café (DigiBeet en Katten Cafe), and the beautiful Grote Since-Laurenskerk.
Zaans Schans - See historic windmills, wooden houses, shopping and museums.
Places to eat & drink in Amsterdam
Drinks
After an afternoon walk through Westerpark, if beer is your thing check out Troost and Breugem Meeting Point.
There is also Brouwerij 't IJ which is a brewery next to a windmill right in Amsterdam. Check out the beer tasting with cheese plate.
A local hot spot is the Café Soundgarden. It's located right along the canal so head there on a beautiful day to sit on the water, enjoy a drink while the DJ plays inside.
Food
Stoop and Stoop - A delicious spot for authentic Dutch cuisine. Try any variation of Stamppot. The beef stew is the most traditional, but the sausage was also incredible. The Dutch beef steak with pepper sauce was mouthwatering.
If you end up at the Café Soundgarden, stop at the Brasserie Blazer and get the truffle fries. Enjoy inside in the casual atmosphere or outside on the canal.
Loetje Amsterdam aan 't IJ is near A'dam Tower, but you'll need to plan ahead and make a reservation. It is beautifully situated on the water and has high-end food at a reasonable price.
