Things to do in Hawaii
Explore Volcano National Park
Volcano National Park is a must-visit for any visitor to the Big Island. The park is home to Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, as well as stunning lava flows, steaming vents and lush rainforests. Be sure to hike to the summit of Kilauea Caldera for breathtaking views of the volcano and the surrounding landscape. Don't miss the chance to explore the park's lava tubes and feel like you've stepped back in time.
Hit the Beach
The Big Island is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Whether you're looking for a secluded cove or a bustling beach town, you're sure to find the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun.
Black Sand Beaches
For a unique beach experience, visit Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, a stunning natural wonder known for its volcanic black sand. You might even spot a sea turtle sunning itself on the shore.
White Sand Beaches
If you prefer a more traditional, white sand beach, Hapuna Beach is a must-visit. Known for its pristine sand, crystal-clear waters and stunning beauty, Hapuna Beach is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. Don't forget to rent a body board and catch some waves!
Attend a luau
A luau is a traditional Hawaiian feast and celebration that offers a unique glimpse into the island's culture. It typically includes a delicious buffet of Hawaiian cuisine, live music and entertainment. And includes traditional Hawaiian activities like hula dancing and fire-knife performances. We had the opportunity to attend a luau at the Royal Kona Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii, and it was an unforgettable experience.
Go snorkeling
The Big Island of Hawaii offers some of the best snorkeling in the world. Kealakekua Bay is a must-visit for its diverse marine life and historical significance. For beginners, Honaunau Bay and Kahaluu Bay are excellent options due to their calm waters and abundant fish. We personally enjoyed snorkeling at Magic Sands Beach Park, which is close to downtown Kona with easy access to the water from the beach. We also snorkeled at Honaunua (Two Step), a popular spot recommended by many locals.
Night snorkel or dive with manta rays
This is a unique experience to the Big Island, where you can watch the water literally glow due to the phosphorescent plankton the Manta Ray feeds on. While going into the water at night can seem a bit scary, especially for novice snorkelers or those that aren’t strong swimmers, there is no need to worry. You will be holding onto a float with your fellow snorkelers and a trained guide. My husband enjoyed a close encounter with one of the manta rays the locals affectionately nicknamed Elvis. It is believed to be good luck if you are lucky enough to have one of these gentle giants brush against you!
Take a drive to the Pololu Valley Lookout
Pololu Valley Lookout is a stunning viewpoint located on the North Kohala coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Offering breathtaking panoramic views of the valley's dramatic cliffs, lush vegetation and the Pacific Ocean. It's a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the island. For a more immersive experience, you can hike down into Pololu Valley. The trail is moderate and offers stunning views of the valley's waterfalls, pools and lush vegetation. However, it's important to be prepared for the hike, as it can be strenuous and the weather can be unpredictable.
Visit a coffee farm
Kona coffee is renowned worldwide for its rich flavor and smooth taste. A visit to the Big Island wouldn't be complete without experiencing the process of growing and harvesting this iconic beverage.
Hike to the summit of Mauna Kea
Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is one of the tallest mountains in the world when measured from its base on the ocean floor. A hike to its summit offers a truly unforgettable experience, with breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Pacific Ocean. Keep in mind, the hike to the summit of Mauna Kea is a challenging endeavor. This is due to the high altitude, steep terrain and often unpredictable weather conditions.
