Curator’s statement
Milan is a common layover city for European flights, so it's likely that you might end up with a short stay here, like I had recently. And I LOVED it! Milan was chic, vibrant and oh so delicious. It reminded me of the type of city that Vienna is, albeit slightly fancier. I packed as much sightseeing and good food into my 24-hour trip and left feeling accomplished--so here's my itinerary for you to copy the next time you're in Milan!

Day 1: Sightseeing
If you're flying from North America, you're likely to arrive in Milan midday/the afternoon. After checking into your hotel, put on your walking shoes and head straight to Sforzesco Castello. This castle is incredible! I spent over an hour wandering around, learning about the history, and soaking up the beautiful architecture.
From the Castello, you'll start walking toward the Duomo. Between the castle and the church, you'll have ample opportunity to explore the Piazza Mercanti and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele Il. Piazza Mercanti has some really amazing architecture and art sprinkled throughout, so make sure to peek downside streets and take your time. And Galleria Vittorio Emanuele Il is stunning, even if you don't do a single bit of shopping (although by all means, indulge yourself here!).
Eventually you'll make your way to the Piazza del Duomo, which is truly breathtaking. Photos simply do not do it justice. While I would've liked to have gone into the church, time didn't quite allow. So I sat at a cafe bordering the Piazza and drank an Aperol Spritz while I basked in the beauty of the Duomo...and all the people watching too!
Now that you've worked up a real appetite, you're going to head to Piz for dinner. This renowned spot lives up to every bit of the hype. You'll turn down a small alley, where you'll find the restaurant tucked at the very end. Once inside, it is vibrantly painted and decorated. When you sit down at your table, they bring you a (small) menu and a glass of Prosecco. Choose from the short list of authentic pizzas--you really can't go wrong. And once you've finished your meal, they'll give you a shot of your choice as you pay at the cashier. It was an unforgettable experience, and I enjoyed every second of it!
To end your day, walk over to the Navigli District, which is seemingly everyone's favorite part of town. The canals, bridges, and packed riverwalks are so lovely, but come to life even more when the sun goes down and the string lights turn on! Spend some time here: grab some gelato, or sit at a cafe and have a few drinks. I'm willing to bet someone from a neighboring table will strike up a conversation--it's just the Navigli way!
After such a full day of escaping jetlag and seeing so much of Milan, you'll head to your hotel for some much-needed R&R.
Day 2: One Last Milan Meal
For your last morning before heading to the airport, check out of your hotel and head to Giovanni Cova & C. for some authentic, beautiful pastries and coffee. Or, if you want a slightly heartier breakfast, head to the aesthetic and delicious Onest, before saying one final 'arrivederci' to Milano (for now)!
