An ancient building in the daytime.
Curator’s statement

Athens, Greece is an amazing city where modern day meets ancient times. This city never sleeps, with amazing views, delicious food and welcoming locals. You can stay busy or relax at local spas all for an affordable price. In my opinion there is never a bad time to visit, and the weather is spectacular, the only way that I could describe the climate is forest meets desert.

Things to do in Athens

cityscape

Nearby Island

Aegina, this island is a short and affordable ferry ride from Athens, well known for pistachios and give you the island vibes you may expect to see in Greece. Even the locals said we had to visit AT LEAST 1 island.

The Parthenon

This is the main touristy attraction but for good reason. It is an amazing historical sight and also provides great views atop the city.

Monastiraki Square

This is the place to go if you're looking for touristy gifts but also items such as olive oils, candy and more.

Lycabettus Hill

This is great if you are looking for a "hike" in the city, here you can climb a path or take the funicular car to the top. Either way the views will blow you away and the monastery is filled with greek history. There is also a restaurant at the top if you need a quick bite of food.

The National Gardens

If the hustle and bustle of the city is wearing you out, check out the national gardens which is an oasis right near the city centre. At the gardens you can find a pond, bamboo, birds and lots of orange trees. This also provides a great place to get photos.

Ritual Tattoo

If your looking for something to take home with you forever, why not a tattoo. Ritual tattoo has so many amazing artist and a huge selection of flash art. Everyone was also kind and welcoming. Would highly recommend making an appointment, as they were very busy.

Local Festivals

Check google to see if there are any local festivals happening, we went to an international food festival and ate lots of different food and drinks. This was also a great place to just hang out with music and drinks for a few hours.

Metro stations

Overall, the use of the metro is pretty in Athens many of the stations have small historical displays that contain ancient artifacts. Great to take a look at when using local transportation.

Syntagma Square

Check out the house of parliament and watch the changing of the guards that man the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Day Trips

To get to Aegina, Greece or any Greek island, take the ferry at the port located right in Athens. This is easily accessible by the metro.

Places to eat & drink in Athens

A picture of food on a plate.

Savvas Kebab - Near Monastiraki Square and has amazing food as well as roof top with fantastic views, if you go at night there is also a viewing deck to see the parthenon light up... seriously magical.

The Rooster - Although its tucked away outside the city center, this restaurant is amazing and the service was even better. Here you can get traditional Greek food and good drinks.

Elvis - Small Kebob shop outside of the city centre with amazing kebobs at a great value.

The Bread Factory - Great place for pastries and a coffee, has a different selection each day. It is busy and not everyone speaks English, so just be patient as they are trying their best!

Juice Bars - If you see a juice bar, you must try it. The fruit is so fresh and the perfect healthy snack in between meals while you're walking around.

Steve's Tavern - The BEST PIZZA. As hard as it is to believe, this place has the best pizza. They serve mostly pizza and burgers, all with their own twist.

The Blue Parrot - This is a cute bar and restaurant. During the day it may not be busy, however at night this is the place to be. Great selection of cocktails and wine.
