As a travel advisor based in the North of England, I’ve created this tour to show the best that England and Scotland have to offer. From the old streets of York to the beautiful scenery of Scotland and the large landscapes of the Lake District, each place has a special place in my heart.

Day 1: Arrival in York
Travel: Begin your adventure with a scenic train ride across the Pennines from Manchester Airport to York.
York is an amazing city with a rich history. It’s got this charming medieval vibe with cobblestone streets and the stunning York Minster. Walking through York feels like stepping back in time.
Hotel: The Grand, York
Stay at The Grand, York. It’s right next to the historic walls and offers great views of York Minster. The hotel is super luxurious, and the restaurant serves tasty European cuisine. There’s also a spa in the old railway vaults, which is pretty unique.
Activity: Whisky Tour of Cooper King Distillery
Head to Cooper King Distillery, about 10 miles north of York. It’s England’s only self-built whisky and gin distillery. You’ll get to hear their fascinating story, see how they make their spirits and taste at least six different ones. If you’re driving, they’ll give you a sample to take home.
Insider Tip: Walk along York’s city walls for a unique view of the city. And definitely check out Betty’s Café Tea Rooms for some afternoon tea — it's a real treat..
Day 2: Journey to Edinburgh, Scotland
Travel: Take a train journey to Edinburgh, Scotland. Edinburgh is a mix of old and new, with a lot of history. The castle, the Royal Mile and Arthur’s Seat are all must-sees. It’s a vibrant city with stunning architecture.
Hotel: The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh
Stay at The Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street. It’s a 5-star hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a great whisky bar.
Activity: Whisky Tasting at The Scotch Whisky Experience. It’s a great way to learn about whisky making and taste some top-notch whiskies.
Insider Tip: I recommend taking a stroll down the Royal Mile. There are lots of unique shops and historic sites to explore. It’s a great way to soak up the city’s atmosphere.
Day 3: Exploring Edinburgh
Activity: Discover Edinburgh’s Historic Sites
Start with a visit to Edinburgh Castle. It offers stunning views and a deep dive into Scottish history. Then, explore the Royal Mile, packed with shops and street performers. In the afternoon, hike up Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views. In the evening, enjoy a whisky tasting dinner at the Amber Restaurant.
Insider Tip: Take a hike up Arthur’s Seat early in the morning for the best views. It’s a bit of a climb, but totally worth it. Also, check out the Camera Obscura — it’s full of cool optical illusions and has a great rooftop view.
Day 4: Journey to Speyside
Travel: Head to the Speyside region, renowned for its whisky distilleries. Speyside is whisky heaven. It’s famous for its numerous distilleries and beautiful landscapes with gentle hills and rivers. The whiskies here are usually sweet, rich and complex.
Hotel: The Macallan Estate, Speyside
Stay at The Macallan Estate. It’s luxurious with stunning views and top-notch service.
Activity: Tour of The Macallan Distillery
Take a tour of The Macallan Distillery. You’ll learn about their single malts and enjoy a tasting session. The estate also has some lovely walking trails.
Insider Tip: Take your time during the tasting session to really appreciate each whisky. The staff know their stuff, so don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Day 5: Explore Speyside Distilleries
Activity: Visit Glenfiddich and Aberlour Distilleries
Start with a tour at Glenfiddich Distillery. Learn about its history and production, followed by a tasting session. In the afternoon, head to Aberlour Distillery for another tour and tasting.
Insider Tip: Spend some time exploring the Speyside countryside. A picnic by the River Spey is a great way to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Day 6: Journey to the Highlands
Travel: Journey north to the Highlands, home to some of Scotland’s most famous distilleries. The Highlands are known for their dramatic landscapes with mountains, glens and lochs. It’s a region rich in history and folklore.
Hotel: The Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire. It’s a 5-star hotel in the countryside with luxurious accommodation and world-class dining.
Tour of Glenmorangie Distillery, famous for its tall stills and smooth whisky. Enjoy a guided tour and tasting session, then take a walk around the beautiful grounds.
Insider Tip: Take a short drive to Dornoch Beach after your tour. It’s a peaceful spot for a walk along the shore.
Day 7: Visit Dalmore and Glen Ord Distilleries
In the morning, tour Dalmore Distillery. Learn about their unique whisky-making techniques and enjoy a tasting. In the afternoon, head to Glen Ord Distillery for another tour and tasting. Glen Ord is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland.
Insider Tip: Ask about Dalmore’s special cask finishes. They’ve got some unique whiskies aged in wine and port barrels. At Glen Ord, try the 18-year-old single malt — it’s a standout.
Day 8: Lake District Adventure
Travel: Journey south to the Lake District. The Lake District is known for its beautiful lakes, rolling hills and charming villages. It’s perfect for outdoor activities and enjoying stunning scenery.
Hotel: The Samling Hotel, Lake District. It offers amazing views of Lake Windermere, has great service and a Michelin Star restaurant.
Tour of The Lakes Distillery. Learn about their whisky-making process and enjoy a tasting. The distillery’s setting is beautiful. In the evening, enjoy a Michelin-starred meal at the hotel’s restaurant.
Insider Tip: The Lakes Distillery also makes great gin and vodka. Give them a try during your tasting session.
Day 9: Explore the Lake District and Day 10: Head back to Manchester
Day 9: Explore the Lake District
Activity: Discover the Lake District’s Natural Beauty
Spend the day exploring the Lake District. Take a boat trip on Lake Windermere or hike through the fells. The area is perfect for outdoor activities. In the evening, relax back at the hotel.
Insider Tip: If you’re hiking, pack a picnic and enjoy it at one of the scenic spots. The views are incredible. Also, visit Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s former home, for a bit of local history.
Day 10: Head back to Manchester
