Curator’s statement

Nestled in the heart of Italy's Puglia region, Alberobello is by far amongst my favorite places when visiting Puglia in Southern Italy. Renowned for its distinctive trulli buildings — whitewashed, conical-roofed structures that date back to the 14th century — Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage site which you cannot miss on your next trip to Apulia!

  • Explore the Trulli of Rione Monti: Wander through the largest concentration of trulli in Alberobello. This area is bustling with shops, restaurants and local artisans selling traditional crafts.

  • Visit Trullo Sovrano: The only two-story trullo in Alberobello, this museum offers insight into how people lived in these unique homes. It's well preserved and filled with period furnishings.

  • Admire the Church of Saint Anthony: This trullo-shaped church is a rare and fascinating sight. It's located at the top of Rione Monti and provides a peaceful place for reflection.

  • Take a guided Trulli Tour: Gain a deeper understanding of the history and architecture of the trulli with a local guide. Tours often include visits to private trulli homes and workshops.

  • Explore the Aia Piccola district: This quieter, less touristy area offers an authentic look at trulli still used as residences. It's a great place for photography and experiencing local life.

  • Enjoy the view from Belvedere Santa Lucia: This vantage point offers panoramic views of the trulli rooftops. It's especially beautiful at sunset when the soft light enhances the charm of the landscape.

  • Attend the Festival of St. Cosmas and Damian: Held in late September, this festival celebrates the town's patron saints with religious processions, music and traditional food.

  • Discover Local Wines at Cantina Albea: This winery and museum offer tastings of regional wines, such as Primitivo and Negroamaro, along with a fascinating look at local winemaking traditions.

Day Trips:

While Alberobello is a gem in itself, the surrounding region offers many exciting day trip opportunities:

  • Matera: Just an hour's drive away, Matera is famous for its ancient cave dwellings and stunning rock churches. The Sassi districts are a must-visit.

  • Polignano a Mare: A picturesque coastal town known for its dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It's perfect for a day of swimming and exploring sea caves.

  • Locorotondo: A charming hilltop town with whitewashed houses and narrow, winding streets. It's one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and offers excellent local wines.

  • Castellana Caves: Explore one of Italy's most impressive cave systems, located just a short drive from Alberobello. The guided tours take you through stunning underground landscapes.

  • Ostuni: The "White City" is renowned for its dazzling white buildings and panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea. It's a great place for a leisurely stroll and a delicious meal.
