Curator’s statement

The Hill Country region of Texas is so special. Being a native Houstonian, it is somewhere that I've been going my whole life. Its scenery is beautiful and the area is full of activities. From wineries, to amusement parks, to family-friendly resorts, there is something for the whole family. There are also many small towns in the area, each with their own unique identity. It's a great getaway where you will never run out of things to do or places to explore.

Things to do in Texas Hill Country

  • Visit Fredericksburg: Fredericksburg is a small wine town with a cute main street full of tasting rooms, restaurants, and shopping. It's a great day trip from your home base in the area.

  • Visit Wimberly: Another small town in the area that is worth a visit is Wimberly. Their town center is full of locally owned boutiques and restaurants. There are many breweries and wineries in the area that are family friendly, as well as many opportunities for hiking. Don't forget to check out Blue Hold Regional Park during your visit.

  • Visit San Antonio: San Antonio is full of popular attractions like their famous Riverwalk, Fiesta Texas theme park, Sea World, and of course, the Alamo. There are also amazing resorts in the area that are really destinations in their own right. The Riverwalk area can be very busy and crowded, so if you want to avoid the crowds, I recommend staying at one of the resorts nearby. Don't forget to try the many amazing Mexican restaurants and bakeries in the area.

  • San Antonio Zoo: The San Antonio Zoo is one of my favorites. I have been visiting since I was a kid and can't wait to take my own kids one day.

  • Take a Wine Tour: There are many tours in the area that can take you around to the best wineries in the region.

  • Gruene: This town is famous for its music hall. It's a fun stop to grab drinks and enjoy some live country music. Don't forget your cowboy boots!

  • Canyon Lake: Canyon Lake is beautiful and a short drive from San Antonio. Rent a boat and enjoy a day out on the water!

  • Natural Bridge Caverns: Take a tour and go underground to explore these extensive caverns. This is something that the whole family will enjoy.

  • The Auslander: There is a large German influence in this region, which has brought along a lot of great German restaurants. The Auslander is one of them. Great casual atmosphere and delicious German cuisine.

  • Wimberley Cafe: This is an all-day eatery in Wimberley, but I particularly love their pancakes!

  • The Shady Llama: This unique beer and wine garden has llamas on the property as well as kid areas with slides. The views alone are worth visiting for!

  • Creekhouse Kitchen and Bar: They have an amazing patio along the water and often feature love music. They are also a great place to stop for cocktails.

  • La Panaderia Bakery-This bakery is always super crowded with a long line, but it is worth it. Amazing pastries and baked goods.

  • Paloma Blanca: Delicious Mexican food and great cocktails. The skinny margarita is great!

  • Gristmill River Restaurant: This is a really unique restaurant located in an 1870's cotton gin. There is also great outdoor seating with views of the Guadalupe River.

  • The Pantry: Great breakfast spot inside the Gruene Mansion Inn.
