Things to do in Thailand
Koh Samui
One of our family's firm favorites, Samui has it all. Just a short flight from Bangkok and you'll be welcomed by ice cool tropical drinks and friendly hospitality. Grab lunch at one of the bohemian beach clubs on Lamai Beach or head to Fisherman's Village for sunset and catch a fire show while enjoying a cocktail in the sand. Book an island hopping tour and discover the nearby Ang Thong National Park or book a day trip to dive in Koh Tao. Head to the night market to sample some local eats or visit Samui Elephant Sanctuary and spend the day with the friendly giants.
Stay at the Four Seasons Koh Samui for the ultimate in five-star luxury. Stunning pool villas, a variety of Thai and international dining, and a treehouse-themed kids club. Their full-service private beach is one of the best on the island with water-sports and activities for all ages.
Koh Phangan
Koh Samui's hippie little sister, Koh Phangan is laid back, picturesque and full of spirituality. Take a 30-minute fast ferry from Koh Samui and you'll set foot in a natural paradise. As family travelers, we skipped the infamous full moon parties and headed to the east side of the island where you will discover picturesque Haad Yao and Haad Salad. There you'll find rustic beach hotels, delicious seafood restaurants, bars right by the water, pristine white sand beaches and a child-friendly community. Book a week of yoga lessons with one of the local instructors, shop at a boho artisanal market or partake in a fun cooking class.
For a luxurious stay, head to Anantara Rasananda located on Thong Nai Pan. Book one of the private pool villas right on the beachfront, lounge at their sleek beach bar or indulge in elevated Thai fare at the in-house restaurant.
Phuket
If you're looking for big resorts and a more direct international route, Phuket is the best choice for your family. The well-built-up island offers a plethora of accommodation options, incredible beaches, fun day trip opportunities and plenty of kids' activities.
Stay at Rosewood Phuket for one of the most stylish five-star properties on the island. We love the spacious and modern two-bedroom pool villas boasting spectacular views and two large bedrooms perfect for those traveling with small children. The service is outstanding, and the dining destinations will please any foodie. The sleek pool is only steps from the quiet beach and our kids couldn't get enough of the expansive indoor and outdoor kids' club.
If you're looking for a day out of the sun, check out the Sunday Walking Market in Phuket Town. There you can shop at the eclectic boutiques, visit Instagram-worthy cafes, and sample authentic street food from the many stands lining the streets.
Krabi
Krabi is an idyllic jumping-off point for the quintessential longtail boat-style island hopping you often see in postcards. Whether you hop on a group tour or arrange a luxe private ride, it's the perfect spot to explore a plethora of captivating islands and scenery. Head over to Railay Beach to admire the spectacular karsts and caves, kayak into the sunset before heading to a bohemian beach bar for cocktails or rock climb to stunning viewpoints with a trained professional. Hop on a tour of the five islands or ask your captain for the best secret beach for a seafood BBQ.
Stay at the luxurious Tubkaak Resort where you will find serene beach villas, mouthwatering Thai restaurants and a quiet beach overlooking the iconic Hong Islands. Book a private picnic on the resort's longtail boat where they'll pack a deluxe lunch for you and your family. Enjoy your tranquil meal while leisurely cruising through the captivating Hong Lagoon just a 15-minute ride from the shore.
Koh Samet
This island is slightly harder to reach from Bangkok but well worth the trek for its pristine beaches and authentic local vibes. Explore Koh Samet from the back of a tuk-tuk, stopping at the popular beaches along the way. You'll find tranquil coves adorned with sun loungers, beach bars and plenty of snorkeling opportunities or busy long beaches catering to those who want to try their hand at adventurous watersports. As the island is lesser known by tourists, the lower prices and authentic Thai culture are always a welcome treat. Local seafood is served in abundance right on the sand and small Thai eateries line the small buzzing streets that navigate the island.
Stay at Paradee, located at the end of the island, and find a hidden paradise complete with luxury five-star private pool villas, world-class dining, unforgettable sunsets, a decadent Thai spa and crystal clear waters right on the private beach. Service is unbeatable and their in-house tuk-tuk can take you to explore the island before returning to the luxurious sanctuary.
