Santa Fe, New Mexico
Curator’s statement

New Mexico is so different from anywhere else in the United States, and it’s got everything that communicates Americana in an ancestral way. Highly inspired by Mesoamerican pre-Hispanic communities, this land is where Georgia O'Keeffe created her artistic legacy. The following itinerary is excellent for a weekend getaway.

Things to do in New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico

When traveling to New Mexico, map out a route to Albuquerque and Santa Fe – the genuine gemstones of this adobe-engraved land. The two cities embody the essence of New Mexico, carrying a waft of the artistic spirit, culinary exploration and venturing into the expanses of natural ways.

Albuquerque

The beauty of Albuquerque is in the variety of available activities. Visit the Petroglyph National Park, one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America. The Griegos Lateral is great for walking and biking along the irrigation ditch. Take the Sandia Peak Tramway at 10,000 ft in the air.

The city is also jam-packed with art and culture. Make sure to pop by the Albuquerque Museum to discover local culture and art. The Turquoise Museum is a family-owned destination that compiles the history of turquoise and informational exhibits in one space. There is even a Swarovski crystal chandelier made up of 21,500 turquoise beads!

For those looking to get some shopping in, the Old Town has many stores with local treats and trinkets. Check out the Lapis Room for beautiful jewelry and home items, the store also has an art gallery and a wine shop. Luna & Luz is a small-batch store that sells earthy beauty products, sticks and stones. Bookworks is a lovely independent bookstore that supports the local community. Toad Road is a Nob Hill clothing store with exciting and extraordinary pieces for the fashionistas. The music fiends might want to discover Nob Hill Music, a local record shop that carries CDs, cassettes and LPs. Finally, Penny Smith's Paper is an excellent local paper and gift shop for souvenirs.

Santa Fe

When in Santa Fe, you will probably want to stay in town, but the adventure junkies might want to head out to Ski Santa Fe, located 16 miles north of the city with a base elevation of 10,350 ft. In town, exploration is all about art. Visit the Meow Wolf; a must-see interactive and immersive experience for all ages. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is also a must-visit for walking through the artist’s paintings and creative process. The IAIA Museum is the country's only museum presenting the most progressive work of contemporary Native artists. Finally, to unwind, you might want to visit Ten Thousand Wave, inspired by Japanese mountain hot springs resorts, private outdoor hot tubs, bodywork and a fantastic Japanese restaurant.

Shopping in Santa Fe is terrific, featuring collector’s items and unique pieces. The Santa Fe Dry Goods is a lux home decor and candles, unique designer clothing and accessories shop. Susan's Christmas Shop features all-things-Christmas, year-round – trust me! The Sign Of The Pampered Maiden is a fun women’s earrings and clothing boutique. Men’s fashion can be found at Corsini. The Santa Fe Vintage Outpost features unique finds of jewelry, clothing and objects. Finally, check out Secret and Sons’ Southwestern furniture, accessories and rugs for some interior decor.

Day Trips

If you have a few more days in New Mexico, you might want to go to Abiquiu and stop by Bode's General Merchandise, Ghost Ranch, Plaza Blanca, Dar al Islam and the Abiquiu Lake. You can also make your way to Tao via the High Road, where you can check out the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Finally, Madrid is also a lovely destination, and you can drive through when on your way from ABQ to Santa Fe. Stop by the Turquoise Trail, White Mesa, Black Mesa and even the White Sands National Monument
