Things to do in Door County

A group of people sitting at a a table and clinking glasses filled with velvety red wine.

Take the ferry to Washington Island and visit the Midwest’s largest lavender farm, Fragrant Isle. July and August are peak season for blooming, which is very Instagrammable.

There are no shortages of wineries or distilleries on the peninsula. Hop on a Door County trolley for their Premier Wine Tour, and take the hassle out of planning. More of a cocktail girl? Don’t worry; they’ve got you covered as well.

Who doesn’t love a spa day? There are so many to choose from across the peninsula. Head over to Settlement Inn & Lavender Spa to enjoy a signature massage, or a more unique experience, including emotional release sound therapy. The Spa at Sacred Grounds offers skin care treatments and acupuncture in tranquil wooded surroundings. Spa Verde offers a healing experience within a chemical-free oasis, using only organic and natural products.

There are plenty of options for girls who love to shop. In fact, the only thing you won’t find much of are big box stores. With more than 100 galleries and artist studios, you’re sure to find a one-of-a-kind piece to add to your home. If you’re looking for a souvenir that benefits a good cause, head to the Door County Candle Company. Owned and operated by a Ukrainian-American woman, she created a “Support a Cause” line of candles, with proceeds going to support the people of Ukraine, as well as the Maui wildfires.

And no trip to Door County would be complete without visiting one of the many apple and cherry orchards. There are so many to choose from, but I recommend Seaquist Orchards in Sister Bay for their delicious pies, apple cider donuts, and homemade jams/sauces.

Places to eat & drink in Door County

A restaurant scene, with people gathered around a long, wooden table, set with wine glasses, bread baskets, and a close-up view of a stunning plate of fish, green salad, and a balsamic vinaigrette.

CHOP: this family-run steakhouse uses local ingredients, with an emphasis on American steakhouse cuisine. Or if you prefer seafood, you can visit their sister restaurant, Lure.

Wild Tomato: They serve delicious wood-fired pies and salads (and cheese curds, of course), and their monthly “Donation Creation” raises funds for local charities.

Roots Inn & Kitchen: A great option for those with dietary restrictions, Roots Inn & Kitchen focuses on locally sourced, flavorful vegan "comfort food."

Hatch Distilling: Stop by for a hand-crafted cocktail, and take home any of their bottled spirits. I’m a fan of their Apple Brandy, which is crafted with locally grown apples. It’s the perfect base for a Brandy Old Fashioned, the most iconic Wisconsin drink.

Island Orchard Cider: My husband may work in the craft beer industry, but I’m a huge fan of hard ciders, and because I’m a Wisconsin girl, my favorite happens to be located in Ellison Bay. Visit their taproom and try a flight to find your favorite type of cider. I recommend the Apple Lavender and award-winning Brut Apple Reserve.

Waterfront Mary’s Bar & Grill: Come here for unassuming bar food and burgers, live music and waterfront views of Sturgeon Bay. They are also one of many restaurants on the peninsula that offers a traditional fish boil.
