Curator’s statement
Tokyo is a mysterious, exciting and other-worldly place to visit. This vibrant city has so much to offer, it may sometimes feel overwhelming. Having lived in Tokyo for 10 years, I was fortunate enough to learn the language and become friends with Japanese locals, who introduced me to the hidden gems of the city. Things to do in Tokyo
The best part is the off-the-beaten-path restaurants, from incredible yakitori (chicken skewers), to insanely delicious sushi and even the opportunity to dine inside an ancient farmhouse that's been transplanted inside an office building in Akasaka!
When it comes to cultural immersion, I've got the Insider's Guide to ancient temples and shrines, as well as technologically advanced immersive experiences in the heart of Roppongi!
Whether you want to shop 'til you drop, or spend the afternoon in a local museum, step into Japanese history brought to life in the ultra modern city of Tokyo and experience parts of the city most tourists have never seen!
CULTURE
Teamlab: Interactive and immersive museum experience. a real "WOW" adventure!
National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo: A must-see and right down the street from Hachibei restaurant I mentioned above.
Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills: Always has intriguing exhibits...modern art.
Insider Tip: Take the elevator to the top of MORI TOWER for an astounding view of the entire city. It's mind-blowing!!
For something more local and VERY Japanese..
Nezu Museum - Minami Aoyama: One of my favorites and the shopping around the museum is world-famous and off the charts!! Boutiques, cafes, global brands, local brands, etc...
Shinjuku Gyoen Garden: Gorgeous park in Shinjuku. You can actually walk through it to Meiji Shrine. It's the most impressive shrine in the heart of Tokyo. That will lead you to the famous Harajuku district, shopping, fashion, crazy costumes and lots of photo opportunities!
Tokyo Tower in Roppongi: It has a great view and is located next to a beautiful temple. Zojoji Buddhist Temple.
Kabukicho near Shinjuku 4 chome. (the underbelly of Tokyo nightlife)
"drink, drank, drunk" is the motto. Fascinating though...
Insider Tip: You have to go at night. Within Kabukicho, there is Golden Gai (Way). It's compelling and consists of a few rows of streets that were old brothels converted into hundreds of mini-bars. Bizarre and fascinating and fun!
