Curator’s statement
For a weekend of family-friendly fun or for the young at heart, start the holidays in Sonoma County. The trip features Charles Schulz' hometown's annual event, the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Grove. The town green is adorned with 225 half-wine barrels, each holding a uniquely decorated tree, accompanied by a nightly "snowfall." Keep it retro by making your base for this road trip weekend at Santa Rosa's The Astro Motel. In Sonoma, enjoy leisurely lunches at quaint cafes, sample fresh, seasonal dishes and warm mulled wines, all while taking in the festive lights that adorn the area's historic buildings. Cap off the stay with a hike through the nearby Jack London State Historic Park. Take in the majestic natural beauty of the area and the towering trees draped in holiday mist.

Day 1: Santa Rosa arrival
On your way into Santa Rosa, take the scenic route through the vineyards surrounding the town of Sonoma. Head to Sonoma's Overlook Trail for stunning panoramic views of the valley. Or stop at Bouverie Preserve for a gentle hike with excellent vistas of the surrounding countryside. Continue on to Santa Rosa and check into your hotel. Cozy up to the outdoor fireplace or check out a boardgames from the vintage lounge.
Day 2: Redwoods and Christmas magic
Spend the afternoon at Jack London State Historic Park, located just a short drive from Sonoma. The park offers scenic trails for a family-friendly hike through redwood groves and open meadows. In December, the misty winter air and quiet landscape create a serene atmosphere perfect for a peaceful walk. For a cozy, seasonal meal, dine at The Girl & The Fig, a local favorite known for its French-inspired, farm-to-table dishes. The restaurant offers a welcoming atmosphere, with a fireplace and hearty winter fare like duck confit or braised short ribs. Complete the day with a visit to Windsor's annual non-profit event, Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Grove, showcasing community-decorated trees.
Day 3: Ice skating and market
After you check out, make the most of your stay in the Peanut's creator's hometown, by visiting the Charles Schultz Museum. You can even go on a scavenger hunt to find the Peanut's statues. Nearby, rent skates and get in some ice skating. Warm up at the attached café, one of Schulz’ favorite hangouts. On your way home, stop at Sonoma Market: pick up any last-minute goodies, grab local wines, olive oils and fresh produce as a reminder of your cozy, festive weekend getaway.
