Curator’s statement

I lived in Lisbon for one year and took every opportunity I had to discover the many treasures of Portugal. If this is your first time in this wonderful country and you only have one week, this is the itinerary I would recommend.

Day 1: Lisbon

Wander in Lisbon by riding a bondinho (tram).

Start your Lisbon adventure by soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the historic Alfama district. Wander through narrow cobblestone streets, admire colorful tiled buildings and stop by São Jorge Castle for panoramic views of the city.

Head to the iconic Praça do Comércio and stroll along the Tagus River. Stop for a drink at the Doca da Marinha to enjoy the sunset then treat yourself to some seafood at Sea Me.

Day 2: Lisbon

The delicious Pastel de Nata is available at the famous Pastéis de Belém bakery.

Spend your second day exploring the picturesque neighborhood of Belém. Take a ferry from Praca do Comercio and pass under the 25 Abril bridge, very similar to the Golden Gate Bridge (after all, they were both built by the same company) and hope off at Belém Tower Along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery, they both are UNESCO World Heritage sites well worth the visit. Don't forget to indulge in a delicious Pastel de Nata at the famous Pastéis de Belém bakery right next door to the Monastery.

Grab a taxi back to Lisbon and the neighborhood of Principe Real, located on yet another hill, right across Saint Jorge's Castle. Shop the local boutiques, admire the views and have a drink in the many bars and restaurants. The rooftop at Lumi's is one of my favorites.

Day 3: Óbidos and Bacalhôa Visit

Whitewashed houses with vibrant bougainvillea flowers in the town of Obidos.

Venture outside Lisbon for a day trip to the charming medieval town of Óbidos, a 40mn drive. Explore its narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers. The bougainvillea is just stunning! Visit the impressive Castle of Óbidos, walk the ramparts and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

After lunch, head to the Bacalhôa Palace and Vineyard 15mn away for a wine tasting experience amid stunning gardens and historic architecture. Buddha Eden — the largest Asian garden in Europe, with around 35 hectares of land. It was created as a reaction to the destruction of the Buddhas of Banyan, in which one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarity took place, erasing masterpieces of late-period Gandhara art. Admire these statues and many more from different artists before heading back to the city.

Day 4: Cabo da Roca, Azenhas do Mar, Ericeira

Azenhas do Mar is a picturesque coastal village in Portugal.

Embark on a captivating journey along the rugged coast of Portugal, starting with a visit to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Stand in awe as you gaze out at the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean from the iconic cliffs. Hold on to your hats, wind guaranteed! Next, make your way to the picturesque village of Azenhas do Mar, perched dramatically atop towering cliffs overlooking the sea. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Azenhas do Mar, during the summer months the natural pool and bar open for a refreshing swim.

Finally, continue to Ericeira, a laid-back fishing town renowned for its world-class surf breaks and pristine beaches. Enjoy the late afternoon on the beach and settle in to your hotel.

Day 5: Ericeira

View of Ericeira Beach from Hotel Vila Gale.

Spend the day soaking up the sun on one of its beautiful beaches, such as Praia dos Pescadores or Praia do Sul. Explore the town's winding streets lined with charming cafes, shops and seafood restaurants. If you're feeling adventurous, why not try your hand at surfing, many classes are offered, or simply relax and enjoy the laid-back vibe of this coastal gem.

Enjoy an authentic seafood dinner at Esplanada Furnas for fresh fish and the best table to view the sunset overlooking the ocean!
