Places to visit in Taiwan

Shifen "Golden" Waterfall with cascading waters tinted by minerals, creating a stunning golden hue.

Yangmingshan Mountain National Park

Located in both Taipei and New Taipei City, this national park offers a beautiful clock made from flowers, tea houses, food stalls, and, in spring, fields of Calla Lilies and Cherry Blossoms for viewing. Yangminshan features numerous hiking trails and is accessible by public bus or car.

Yehliu Geo-Park

Experience a landscape of otherworldly rock formations overlooking the sea. Some rock sculptures resemble various objects, creating excellent photo opportunities. A perfect stop between Yangminshan and Keelung.

Keelung

Explore Keelung, a coastal city in northern Taiwan, starting with the lively Keelung Harbor. Take in the maritime scenery and then head to the Zhupa Altar Temple, known for its association with the Ghost Festival and intricate architecture.

Don't forget to capture a moment at the iconic Keelung sign, a landmark that welcomes visitors to the city. As night falls, continue your exploration at the Keelung Night Market, where you can dive into local street food and soak up the lively atmosphere.

Keelung is easily reachable by public transit, making it a convenient destination for those looking to experience a mix of coastal views, cultural sites, and vibrant street life in northern Taiwan.

Jiufen

Jiufen is a charming and historic town located in the Ruifang District of New Taipei City, Taiwan. Here are Jiufen Travel Guide:

Old Street Charm:

Explore Jiufen's famous Old Street, a narrow, winding area filled with traditional shops offering local snacks and unique souvenirs. Immerse yourself in the nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of early 20th-century Taiwan.

Teahouses with a View:

Indulge in the town's renowned teahouses and cafes, perched on the hillsides and providing breathtaking views of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Don't miss the iconic A-Mei Tea House for its traditional architecture and charm.

Gold Mining History:

Discover Jiufen's gold mining past at the Gold Mine Museum, showcasing tools and equipment used during the mining era. Gain insight into the lives of the miners who once thrived in this prosperous town.

Spirited Away Connection:

Experience the enchanting streets that reportedly ( it is a debatable topic) inspired scenes from Studio Ghibli's "Spirited Away." Jiufen's atmospheric setting adds an extra layer of allure for animation enthusiasts.

Shifen "Golden" Waterfall

Near Jiufen,  in New Taipei City.  Shifen “Golden Waterfall” is surrounded by lush greenery.  This natural wonder captivates visitors with its dramatic cascades. This attraction   showcases a golden-hued waterfall due to sulfur, copper, and arsenic.  Accessible by public bus or private car.

Pingxi Sky Lantern

Create and launch your paper sky lantern. The release of sky lanterns holds deep cultural and symbolic significance in Taiwanese tradition. It is believed that sending up lanterns symbolizes letting go of the past and welcoming good fortune and blessings for the future. People often write their wishes, hopes, or prayers on the lanterns before releasing them, adding a personal touch to the tradition.

Visit the area any time of the year, combining well with a trip to Shifen waterfall and Jiufen.

Fushan Botanical Garden

South of Taipei, this natural escape focuses on flora and fauna. Limited daily visitors ensure a crowd-free experience. Explore boardwalks, paths, ponds, and encounter various wildlife. Admission is free, but keep in mind that reservations are required to secure your spot. The best way to reach this hidden gem is by private car or driver, ensuring a seamless journey to this nature lover's paradise. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Fushan Botanical Garden for a peaceful and immersive escape.

Jiaoxi

Head south to the hot spring town of Jiaoxi. Jiaoxi is well-known for its hot springs, and the Japanese have a strong cultural affinity for hot springs. During the Japanese colonial period, there was a focus on developing and promoting hot springs resorts. The Japanese influence on the hot spring culture in Jiaoxi can be seen in the design and management of hot spring facilities.  Relax in public hot springs or foot soaking spots, and visit the nearby Wufengchi waterfall for a picturesque day hike. Recommended route includes a stop at Kavalan Distillery for a whiskey tasting.

Taroko Gorge

Discover the renowned natural beauty of Taroko Gorge, a popular escape near Taipei. Marvel at the breathtaking stone cliffs, traverse winding green paths, and experience the refreshing coolness of the scenic tunnels.

Whether you choose to hire a guide, take advantage of the park bus, or opt for a self-drive adventure, Taroko Gorge offers a perfect day trip or multi-day excursion. While not exactly "off the beaten path," the gorge promises a stunning retreat into Taiwan's captivating landscapes.

Places to eat & drink in Taiwan

Keelung Night Market is a vibrant culinary paradise in Taiwan, offering an array of delectable street food and a lively atmosphere after sundown.

Yangmingshan

Inside the park, find various food stalls and teahouses. Look out for fresh fruit sellers offering pre-cut and seasoned fruits for a delightful walk.

Keelung Area
