Things to do in Rome

A picture of buildings with Roman architecture taken during the daytime.
  • See the Colosseum - No visit to Rome is complete without a visit one of the seven new wonders of the world, the Colosseum. This iconic amphitheater is a testament to the grandeur of the Roman Empire and its past. As you wander through the ancient corridors, you'll feel like you're stepping back in time. It's amazing to think of the work that went into building this and all the things that took place within the stadium. I highly recommend going on a guided tour to learn all about the history and details you can't see on your own.

  • Explore Vatican City - Start with a visit to the Vatican Museums. You'll love the beautiful frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, including Michelangelo's ceiling masterpiece. Then head to St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world, where you'll see Pietà by Michelangelo. You can climb the dome for gorgeous views of the city too. Be sure to dress modestly when visiting the Vatican!

  • Explore Trastevere - Known for its traditional feel.

  • See the Spanish Steps - The Spanish Steps showcase the stunning Baroque architecture.

  • Toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain - Go late at night or before 7 a.m. to beat the crowds (although, there will still be crowds!). If you go at night, grab gelato right across from it!

  • Eat endless pizza, pasta and gelato - It's no secret that Rome (and Italy in general) has some of the most amazing food in the world. You can't go wrong with anywhere you land - pasta, pizza, gelato and tiramisu. Be sure to head to Alfredo alla Scrofa, the spot where Fettuccine Alfredo was invented. Then head to Giolitti Gelato for arguably the best gelato you'll ever taste.

  • Walk along Via Appia Antica - One of the oldest roads in Rome.

  • See the Pantheon - The Pantheon's dome is the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. Its well-preserved interior, including the oculus that brings in natural light, offer a glimpse into the wonders of the Roman Empire.

Place to eat & drink in Rome

Eat:

  • Trieste Pizza - Delicious grab and go pizza.

  • Da Enzo - one of the most popular restaurants in Rome. They don’t take reservations so be prepared for a wait (but it's worth it!)

  • Tonnarello - Cute restaurant in the Trastevere area

  • Alfredo Alla Scrofa - Where fettuccini alfredo originated.

  • Aroma - Amazing restaurant with gorgeous views of the Colosseum

  • Frigidarium Gelato - Amazing gelato

Drink:

  • The Court - Bar with views of the Colosseum

  • Stravinskij Bar at Hotel de Russie - Beautiful courtyard bar, perfect for an aperitif
