VOLTA New York

An immersive contemporary art exhibition that serves as a vibrant platform for emerging artists to unfold their distinctive visions and perspectives. This cutting-edge fair pulsates with the energy of creativity, offering a compelling glimpse into the forefront of the art scene. The spotlight is firmly fixed on the rising stars of the art world, as they navigate the intersection of tradition and innovation with bold strokes and innovative concepts. The fair serves as a curated panorama, where each exhibit unveils a fresh narrative, a testament to the unbridled talent and originality that characterizes the work of these emerging artists.

The Armory Show

For more than a century, the New York Armory Show has stood as a venerable institution in the art world, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon. Pioneering the way for avant-garde expression, this renowned art fair has been a beacon of innovation since its inception. Marking a historic milestone, it proudly holds the distinction of being the first large-scale exhibition of modern art in America, where artistic boundaries were pushed, and creative boundaries expanded.

My Favorite Museums:

The Metropolitan Museum

Step into the extraordinary realm of The Met, a cultural haven that transcends the need for introduction. This vast institution unfolds as a grand tapestry, showcasing an expansive array of collections that traverse the realms of artistic mastery. From the ethereal beauty of Renaissance masterpieces to the exquisite craftsmanship of Edo Japanese sword fittings, The Met weaves together an eclectic narrative that spans the spectrum of human creativity.

For those with a penchant for a more enchanting atmosphere, venture into The Met Cloisters, an embodiment of tranquility and charm that holds a special place in many hearts, including mine. The Cloisters transport visitors to a sanctuary of medieval beauty, surrounded by lush gardens and architectural wonders. It's a personal favorite, where the interplay of art and nature creates an enchanting harmony.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Discover the joy of art history at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. This museum is a haven for art enthusiasts, showcasing groundbreaking works by iconic artists like Picasso and Van Gogh. Immerse yourself in a journey through the evolution of modern art, from Cubism to Abstract Expressionism. MoMA is not just a museum; it's a vibrant testament to the power of human creativity, inviting you to explore the stories behind every canvas and sculpture.

The Studio Museum in Harlem

A personal favorite, where the vibrant cultural tapestry of Harlem takes center stage. This American art museum is a captivating homage to the brilliance of artists of African descent. Nestled in the heart of this iconic neighborhood, the museum beckons tourists on a unique journey through the rich artistic heritage that defines Harlem.

For tourists seeking an authentic Harlem experience, The Studio Museum stands as a must-visit destination. Revel in the colors, stories and rhythms that reverberate through the exhibits, offering a vibrant snapshot of the artistic soul of Harlem. As you wander through the galleries, be prepared to be enchanted by the compelling narratives woven into each masterpiece.

National Museum of the American Indian

Structured predominantly by tribe, the museum unfolds as a vivid visual chronicle of the pre-Columbian history of the United States. Each section offers a unique glimpse into the distinctive heritage of diverse indigenous communities, fostering a profound understanding of their contributions and legacies. Noteworthy is my personal favorite collection, a captivating exploration of Native American fashion, which adds a contemporary flair to the profound cultural tapestry housed within its walls.

Whitney Museum of American Art

Nestled in the pulsating heart of Manhattan's lively Meatpacking District, the Whitney Museum stands as the ultimate sanctuary for enthusiasts of modern and contemporary American art. A dynamic haven, it proudly showcases the vibrant creations of living artists, weaving a tapestry of innovation and expression. As you wander through its curated halls, you'll encounter perennial favorites by iconic visionaries such as Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Alexander Calder and a host of other trailblazers who have left an indelible mark on the rich canvas of American artistic heritage. The Whitney is not merely a museum; it is a living celebration of the evolving narrative of creativity and expression that defines the artistic spirit of the United States.

The Morgan Library and Museum

Originally the personal library of Pierpont Morgan, a financier and cultural benefactor, this treasure trove began in 1890 with a collection of illuminated manuscripts, historical manuscripts, early printed books and masterful drawings.

Churches with Inspiring Architecture:

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

Whether you seek remarkable architecture or simply wish to glimpse the interior of a cathedral, this destination is an ideal choice! It seamlessly blends classic cathedral design with contemporary artistic updates. Explore the cathedral grounds, where Greg Wyatt's "Peace Fountain" adds a touch of modern flair. Embark on a self-guided tour for an enriching and delightful experience.

The Riverside Church

The Riverside Church stands as a distinguished religious icon in New York, its prominence etched into the cityscape. Erected in 1927 through substantial funding from John D. Rockefeller, Jr., this soaring church, characterized by its "skyscraper" design and crowned by a 392-foot tower, was envisioned to command a formidable presence on the Upper West Side skyline.

Trinity Church

Embark on a thrilling journey through time at Trinity Church, a vital witness to the drama of the American Revolution and the birth of the United States. Established under King William III's charter in 1697, this historic gem traces its roots back to the Dutch era when New York was called New Amsterdam.

At Trinity Church, every cobblestone tells a tale of resilience and transformation. Walk in the footsteps of our fore-bearers and catch a glimpse of the Dutch influence that shaped the city's early identity. The graveyard, a silent testament to centuries gone by, holds the final resting place of none other than Alexander Hamilton, leaving you face to face with a piece of American history.

Trinity Church beckons, not just as a place of worship, but as a living monument to the spirited days of yore. Let the echoes of the past reverberate as you explore the hallowed grounds, where the stories of New York's evolution and the birth of a nation come alive in a vibrant tapestry of Dutch heritage and revolutionary fervor.

St. Paul's Chapel

Erected in the year 1766, this venerable church stands proudly as the oldest church building in Manhattan, bearing witness to centuries of history. Positioned a mere stone's throw away, a mere 100 yards from the hallowed grounds of the World Trade Center site, this sacred edifice has earned the endearing moniker of "The Little Chapel That Stood." This title was bestowed upon it in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11, when it valiantly withstood the harrowing collapse of the Twin Towers, emerging as a resilient symbol of hope and endurance in the face of adversity.

Day Trips:

Dia: Beacon

A contemporary art haven offers more exhibition space than Manhattan's Guggenheim, Whitney Museum and MoMA combined. Set in a former Nabisco box-printing plant with 16-foot-high ceilings and sawtooth skylights, the museum is an ideal canvas for the Dia Foundation's permanent collection from the 1960s and 1970s.

The museum's unique design includes individual galleries for each artist, creating an immersive experience tailored to showcase their distinct creations. Dia:Beacon takes visitors on a comprehensive journey through late 20th-century art movements, featuring iconic works from abstract expressionism to minimalism, conceptual art, and pop art.

Dia:Beacon is absolutely worth the day trip and train ride. And while you're waiting for that train, take a look around Grand Central Terminal! It is a masterpiece of art and architecture all in itself. If you're not feeling the long trek, check out the much closer Dia: Chelsea.
