Curator’s statement
Oahu is the perfect destination for outdoor lovers, offering endless opportunities for adventure. I fell in love with the underwater world here, exploring vibrant reefs and swimming alongside sea turtles. Having spent my undergraduate years on the island, Oahu means so much more than a vacation destination. It’s a place that shaped my love for the ocean and outdoor adventure. Whether you're diving, hiking or surfing, there’s always something incredible to discover.

Things to do on Oahu

Views from Lanikai Pillbox Trail
Scuba diving: Explore Oahu’s vibrant underwater world with scuba diving. From coral reefs teeming with marine life to historic shipwrecks, there’s something for every diver, regardless of experience level. Expect to see a variety of underwater species, including sea turtles, rays and even sharks. Tip: Book a morning dive for the best chance to see active wildlife. I recommend diving with Kaimana Divers.
Snorkeling: Not scuba-certified? No problem! Oahu is home to some of the best snorkeling spots in Hawai'i.
Electric Beach: Known for its warm waters and vibrant marine life.
Hanauma Bay: A protected marine reserve with crystal-clear water and abundant fish.
North Shore shark snorkeling: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can snorkel with tiger sharks in a safe and controlled environment. No cages included. The open ocean and an expert team will safely guide you through this thrilling experience.
Hiking: Oahu offers some of the most breathtaking hikes in Hawai'i, with trails for all skill levels.
Koko Head: A challenging climb up over 1,000 steep stairs, but the panoramic views at the top are worth it.
Lanikai Pillbox Trail: A moderate hike with stunning sunrise views over Oahu’s East Side. Cool down at nearby Lanikai Beach afterward.
Makapuʻu tide pools & lighthouse: Choose between a scenic, easy hike to the lighthouse or a more challenging trek down to the tide pools, where you’ll find crystal-clear waters and a natural blowhole. Bonus: Keep an eye out for whales in the winter months.
Sailing: Private sailing on Oahu is necessary for couples and small groups looking for an unforgettable experience. Whether you want to sip champagne while admiring Diamond Head or snorkel with sea turtles at Turtle Canyon, a private sailing trip lets you choose your own adventure. If you visit between December and April, you might even spot humpback whales.
Surfing: A trip to Oahu isn’t complete without catching some waves. You can take a surf lesson in Waikiki, where the gentle waves are perfect for learning. Or head to the North Shore, home to legendary surf breaks like Banzai Pipeline, where you can watch pro surfers tackle massive waves during the winter competition season.
Skydiving: Experience skydiving over Oahu’s breathtaking coastline for the ultimate adrenaline rush. You’ll take in panoramic ocean views and lush mountains from the moment you jump. I believe Oahu is the best place to skydive in the world.
Outdoor yoga: Unwind with outdoor yoga in one of the most serene settings in the world. Whether a sunset beach session or a private guided class, Oahu’s natural beauty makes yoga here an experience like no other.
Places to eat & drink on Oahu

Ube Pancakes at YogurStory... Yum!
Breakfast/brunch
Sunrise Shack: The cutest place in Oahu for delicious smoothies and acai bowls. This is the perfect place to fuel up for your day of adventure. My favorite Sunrise Shack location is on the North Shore.
YogurStory: A must-visit for brunch lovers! Their famous ube pancakes, topped with a rich purple yam sauce, are delicious and Instagram-worthy.
Lunch/happy hour
Helena’s Hawaiian Food: A must-visit for authentic Hawaiian comfort food. Try the kalua pig, laulau and the legendary pipikaula short ribs.
Ono Seafood: One of the best places on the island for fresh poke. The poke here is simple, delicious and made to order. Try the spicy ahi or shoyu poke for a classic local taste.
Monkeypod Kitchen: Known for fresh, farm-to-table dishes and legendary mai tais with honey-lilikoi foam. It is a great spot for happy hour and sunset dining.
Dinner
Sushi ii: A hidden gem for sushi lovers, offering high-quality omakase and creative rolls in an intimate setting. Try the toro for the freshest, melt-in-your-mouth sashimi.
Haleiwa Joe’s: This spot, located in Haiku Gardens and Haleiwa, is known for its massive prime rib and stunning views. The jungle-like setting at Haiku is incredibly captivating.
La Mer: One of the most romantic dining experiences on the island, offering French fine dining with an oceanfront view at the Halekulani Hotel. Ideal for celebrating something special.
Need to know
When visiting any island in Hawai'i, it’s important to respect the ‘āina (land) and the Kamaʻāina (local community). Support local businesses whenever possible, dispose of waste responsibly, and always show kindness and appreciation for the culture and people who call Hawaii home.
Rent a car when visiting Oahu. There is much to see beyond Waikiki.
Culture: Besides adventure activities, visit the Polynesian cultural center to learn more about authentic Hawaiian culture.
