Things to do in Zion

Hike Angels Landing

  • One of the most famous and thrilling hikes in the world, this trail takes you to the top of a narrow ridge with jaw-dropping views of the park. It's a challenging, but unforgettable experience.

Insider tip: Make sure to get an early start — this trail gets crowded quickly, and the earlier you go, the better the chance you’ll have to avoid the crowds.

The Narrows

  • This hike takes you through the Virgin River and deep into Zion Canyon. The water level can vary depending on the season, but it’s a uniquely stunning experience.

Insider tip: Rent water shoes from the park or nearby outfitters — they’ll make the hike more comfortable, especially in slippery conditions.

Canyon Overlook Trail

  • If you want a shorter, less strenuous hike with a great payoff, this one’s perfect. The views from the top are amazing, and it’s suitable for all skill levels.

Insider tip: This trail can be especially beautiful during sunset — grab a spot to watch the golden light hit the canyon walls.

Zion Canyon Scenic Drive

  • If you're pressed for time or just want to take in the park's beauty without breaking a sweat, the scenic drive offers stunning views right from your car.

Insider tip: The park’s shuttle system is the way to go during the busy season, so you don’t have to worry about parking.

Kolob Canyons

  • If you’re looking for a quieter and less crowded spot, this area of Zion offers stunning red rock views and is less visited than the main canyon.

Insider tip: Take the Kolob Canyons scenic drive for a peaceful and stunning experience — perfect for photographers.

Zion Human History Museum

  • If you're curious about Zion's past, this museum offers interesting exhibits on the geology, history and culture of the area.

Insider tip: It’s a great spot to cool off and learn about the park before hitting the trails!

Watchman Trail

  • This relatively easy hike gives you amazing panoramic views of Zion Canyon and the town of Springdale. It’s perfect for a morning or evening hike.

Insider tip: This trail is a great option if you’re trying to avoid the long lines at more popular hikes like Angels Landing.

Grotto Trail and Emerald Pools

  • These trails lead to beautiful, peaceful spots near waterfalls and pools. It’s a great way to experience Zion’s lush side.

Insider tip: The lower and middle pools are easy to reach, but if you’re looking for solitude, go for the upper pools — there’s fewer people up there.

Cultural activities in Springdale

  • The nearby town of Springdale has some great art galleries, local restaurants and shops to explore after a day in the park.

Insider tip: Try a local coffee shop to fuel up before you head back into the park — it’s a nice, relaxed vibe after a day of adventure.

Stargazing at the Kolob Canyons

  • Zion is a dark-sky park, and the Kolob Canyons area offers one of the best spots for stargazing with minimal light pollution.

Insider tip: Bring a blanket and a jacket, as the desert can get chilly at night, but the stars are definitely worth it.

Day trips:

If you're looking to venture outside of Zion National Park, there are some fantastic spots nearby that make for great day trips. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Bryce Canyon National Park (1.5–2 hours away): Bryce Canyon is known for its unique hoodoos — tall, thin spires of rock formed by erosion. It’s a surreal and beautiful landscape with various viewpoints and short trails.

Insider tip: Sunrise or sunset here is magical, as the light plays off the colorful rocks.

  • Cedar Breaks National Monument (1.5 hours away): Similar to Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks features a stunning natural amphitheater with hoodoos and scenic viewpoints. It’s higher in elevation, so it offers cooler temps in the summer.

Insider tip: Visit during the summer months to experience the wildflower bloom or in the fall for vibrant foliage.

  • Snow Canyon State Park (1 hour away): Snow Canyon offers red rock cliffs, lava tubes and desert trails. It’s a smaller park than Zion, but it’s just as beautiful and less crowded.

Insider tip: The Petrified Sand Dunes Trail is a fun and easy hike that’s great for families or those looking for a quick adventure.

  • St. George (45 minutes away): St. George is a charming town with a rich history. You can visit the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site or check out the local art galleries and shops.

Insider tip: If you're a history buff, check out the historic downtown area for old architecture and fun local spots.
