Day 1: Discover Antigua

Start your adventure by taking in the charm of Antigua. Wander the cobblestone streets, explore local shops, and treat yourself to some of the best coffee and chocolate the region has to offer. From the vibrant markets to stunning historical sites, there’s plenty to see and do. This is your day to explore at your own pace!

  • Arco de Santa Catalina: Walk by this iconic arch and admire the beautiful colonial architecture, and of course, snap plenty of pictures—it's one of the most photographed landmarks in Antigua.

  • Coffee tour: Discover Guatemala’s legendary coffee culture with a tour of local coffee plantation. Want a little more thrill? Add an ATV ride to your coffee experience for an extra dash of adventure.

  • Cerro de la Cruz: Hike or take a Tuk Tuk to this iconic viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Antigua and its surrounding volcanoes.

  • Iglesia y Convento de La Merced: Step inside this stunning colonial-era church and explore its peaceful surroundings.

  • Parque Central de Antigua: Wander through the lively main square of Antigua, where you can enjoy the charming cobblestone streets and colonial architecture.

  • Casa Santo Domingo Museums: Dive into the history of Antigua at this unique museum, housed in a former convent.

  • Street food tour: Sample local delicacies on a guided street food tour that takes you through the vibrant food culture of Antigua.

Coffee shop recommendations:

  • Cafe Estudio: This charming coffee shop offers exceptional coffee (including iced options) served in a beautiful courtyard with a fun airplane theme. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a unique atmosphere.

  • Fernando's Kaffee: With a cozy courtyard and strong, flavorful coffee, Fernando’s Kaffee is a must-visit! Their breakfast menu is fantastic, and the Fernando Special is a standout dish. Don’t forget to grab some of their delicious coffee and goodies to take home!

Restaurant recommendations:

  • La Fonda de la Calle Real: This authentic Guatemalan restaurant serves up incredible traditional dishes. I really enjoyed the kaika and pepian! As soon as you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the sight of tortillas being made fresh right before your eyes.

  • Restaurante 7 Caldos: A fantastic spot to enjoy more traditional Guatemalan flavors, with standout dishes! My top two were the jocon and pepian!

  • La Casa de las Sopas: A hidden gem known for its traditional soups, I particularly enjoyed the Caldo de Res. It’s hands down the best soup I have ever tasted!

Day 2: Adventure day

This day is all about adventure, but it’s totally up to you how you want to spend it! If hiking isn’t your thing, no worries, there is plenty more to explore in Antigua. If you stay in Antigua, be sure to stop at a rooftop bar to enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding volcanoes while eating some great food and having a local beer! However, if you're ready for an unforgettable challenge, set off on one of these hikes:

  • Pacaya Volcano: For an exciting half-day adventure, hike up this active volcano. Take in the breathtaking views and roast marshmallows over volcanic hot spots. For added convenience, opt for a horseback ride to the summit.

  • Acatenango Volcano: Embark on an overnight, physically demanding trek up Acatenango, reaching 13,000 feet. Camp at the summit and witness the eruptions of Volcán Fuego. If you are up for even more of a challenge, add on the hike to Fuego itself for an up-close view of the volcanic action. I did this hike and it is challenging but so worth it! Everyone in the group was so nice and we all helped each other get through the journey together.

Day 3: Stay in Antigua or head to Lake Atitlán

If you took on the Acatenango hike and need to rest, spend the afternoon relaxing in Antigua. Head to a spa for a well-deserved treatment and unwind in this beautiful city.

Alternatively, if you’re eager to continue your adventure, take a trip to Lake Atitlán. The journey is around a three-hour drive, with various transportation options available, so you can easily head over.

  • Lake Atitlán: If you’re in the mood for a change of scenery, head to Panajachel, a serene town on the shores of Lake Atitlán. Enjoy a relaxing lakeside experience with stunning views of the surrounding volcanoes. Kayak, paddleboard or explore the charming villages by boat to experience the region’s unique culture.

Coffee shop recommendation:

  • The Little Spoon: A cozy coffee shop overlooking Panajachel’s main road (Calle Santander). Here I enjoyed an amazing traditional breakfast while surrounded by friendly local dogs.

Day 4: Discover the villages of Lake Atitlán

Lake Atitlán is the perfect place to slow down and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and Mayan culture. You can explore the lake’s charming villages by hopping between towns, each offering something unique. Wander through colorful streets, admire local crafts or just relax by the lake.

San Juan La Laguna: Explore this village, famous for its murals and traditional weaving. You can take tours of fabric, coffee, honey and chocolate producers. Or simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of La Calle De Las Sombrillas (the Umbrella Street) while enjoying a frozen chocolate-covered banana.

San Pedro La Laguna: A laid-back town offering stunning views of the lake, perfect for wandering, unwinding or soaking in the local vibes. A great option is to hike up Indian Nose at sunrise to enjoy stunning views of the lake and volcanoes. Not up for a hike to Indian Nose? Hop in a tuk-tuk and head to La Mano Verde, where you’ll get fantastic panoramic views of San Pedro and picturesque photo ops. Want to relax instead? Head to the thermal baths and take a dip in the soothing waters

Restaurant recommendation:

  • Pita Sabij: Enjoy delicious food while overlooking the stunning lake views. I enjoyed an amazing, flavorful eggplant pita and shared the tapas salad sampler, which is a must!

Day 5: Departure

Spend your final morning soaking in the serene beauty of Lake Atitlán before heading back to Guatemala City for your onward journey.

Need to know

Optional day trips:

  • Chichicastenango Market (Sundays only): Don’t miss a visit to this vibrant market, where you can shop for traditional textiles, pottery and fresh produce. It’s the perfect spot to pick up unique souvenirs while experiencing local culture.
