Curator’s statement

Paraty is the perfect side trip if you’re staying in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Nestled in the Costa Verde (Green Coast) of Brazil, Paraty is the perfect mix of idyllic beaches and lush mountains. Though the town itself is relatively small, there are many activities and excursions to be enjoyed including island hopping, boating, jeep tours, snorkeling, hiking, and more! The town also has amazing opportunities to enjoy the night with live music, clubbing, and a vibrant restaurant community.

Where to stay

Day 1: Arrive in Paraty

Restaurants in Paraty at evening

Paraty is about 4 hours from both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro by car or 5-6 hours by bus.

Arrive in Paraty on Friday afternoon and settle into your hotel. Pousada Literaria is a great option if you’d like to experience the historic city center as well as proximity to the nightlife and various restaurants. Alternatively, Casa Mar Paraty is best for those looking for a truly relaxing beach getaway.

Make your way to the city center and enjoy some live music, drinks, and some food at Sarau Paraty or savor some wine and small bites at Paraty Wine Bar.

Day 2: Island hopping

Get ready for some fun on the beautiful waters of the Carioca Bay. An amazing feature of Paraty is all of the surrounding islands and beaches which can be visited by boat. There are plenty of boat expeditions waiting to take you on this beautiful island hopping adventure, many of which we can book for you! These ocean adventures usually take 4-6 hours and leave in the morning, so you’ll still have time to lounge by the beach or take a guided historical city tour in the afternoon! End the day with a delicious dinner at Restaurante Borogodó, Prosa Restaurante, or Van Gogh Hamburgueria.

Day 3: Head into town

Before you head back, take some time to relax and enjoy your last bit of Paraty. Soak up some sun at Praia do Pontal or head into town to pick out some unique artisanal gifts to take back home. Some of my favorite shops in town are Courumbe Arte & Casa, Nós, Estilo Brasil Paraty, and Átame.

If you’re grabbing lunch before leaving, try Via Marine Restaurante, Quintal Verde, or Margarida Café Paraty.
