Things to do in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

There is so much to do besides just lounging and relaxing on the beach. My favorite activities are:

  • Take a surf lesson on the beach. The Aloha Beach services are my favorites.

  • Take a yoga class on the beach.

  • Take a catamaran sunset cruise. Few companies depart from the beach.

  • Book a tour of the Shangri-la mansion from the bishop's museum. Book early, tours sell out months before!

  • Rent a car, and do a circle tour around the island.

  • Watch the sunset on the beach.

  • Go shopping. There is an amazing selection of stores and high-profile boutiques are nearby.

Day Trips:

A must is a snorkeling visit to Hanauma Bay Park. You need to book and pay 48 hours before. Wake up at 7 am and go online to book and pay for your reservation.

If you rent a car for the day, plan to start your day early at Hanauma Bay to visit the park and snorkel the spend the rest of the day exploring the island. I suggest you do a circle counterclockwise with a stop at Sandy Beach. Watch the surfers, then head to Makapu'u, and keep on driving along the stunning coast all the way north to Turtle Bay.

If you are lucky, you might be able to see some turtles on the beach. The views and the drive are pleasant and give you a chance to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. Along the way, you will find several opportunities to stop for a meal or a snack at one of the food trucks. Or stop at Matsumoto Shave Ice to try their famous offerings.

Places to eat & drink in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

Try lunch or dinner at one of these local favorites. Many restaurants on the water often have live music:

  • Chart House Waikiki

  • Barefoot Beach Cafe at Queen's Surf Beach

  • Outrigger Beach Resort

  • Hula Grill

  • Duke's (don't miss Sunday at Duke's 4/6 pm music with Henry Capono)

  • Hua Tree at Kaimana Beach Hotel

  • Dinner: Hy's steakhouse for a classic meal. Reserve the Magnum PI booth.

  • Local snack not to be missed: Shaved Ice with rainbow colors, the yummy pastries called Malasadas. Similar to Italian bomboloni. Stop by Leonard's Bakery and look out for one of their food trucks.

Need to know

If you can travel during the Aloha festivals seasons, you will have an opportunity to witness the beautiful celebrations and parades near the beachfront and feel the amazing aloha spirit. Look up the calendar of activities on Aloha Festivals.
