Advisor - Two Days in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Curator’s statement

Central Asia remains one of the least-visited regions in the world. And Kyrgyzstan is one of the more off-the-beaten-path countries in that region. Bishkek, the capital city, features grand government buildings and fountain-filled parks on a grand scale. This is impressive considering the city's population of 1.1 million. Just outside the city limits, visitors are met with incredible views of the Ala-Too mountains and dramatic landscapes of the alpine Ala Archa National Park. Whether you're popping into Bishkek for a weekend trip or starting a longer trip from the capital, here's a roundup of how to fill your time.

Where to stay

Day 1: Explore Bishkek on foot

Start your morning by observing the eternal flame at Victory Square. Wander through the Theater Park over to the Opera and Ballet Theater, where you might want to grab tickets for the evening show. Browse the art and souvenirs for purchase at the Oak Park Exhibition Hall.

Stop by the imposing State History Museum for a dose of world history and then continue your walk past the Parliament building. You may have worked up an appetite at this point, so take a break and enjoy some local flavors at Navat Restaurant. Wrap up your afternoon with a stroll to the Manas Statue, which is flanked by the Philharmonic Hall on one side and City Hall on the other.

Head back to your hotel and regroup before dinner at the elegant Frunze Restaurant. Bishkek takes culture seriously, and most nights you can find a dance or theater performance taking place. Or you can end your day with a drink- vodka or maksym, which is the national drink made from fermented grains.

Day 2: Nature galore

Rise early and head outside the city. You've got a busy day of exploring ahead! Bishkek was an important stop on the Silk Road, and is surrounded by beautiful nature and historic landmarks. One option is to stop by Burana Tower, which was built in the 11th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in Central Asia, en route to sightseeing in the magnificent Konorchek Canyons. If you'd rather skip the hike, you could head instead to Lake Issyk Kul. Partake in one of the national pastimes- horse riding- along the banks of the lake before stopping for tea in a yurt camp.

If you prefer a more active adventure, head south of Bishkek to the Ala Archa National Park, located within the Tian Shan mountain range. Here you'll find beautiful views of the alpine hillsides, which descend dramatically into a gorge. There are a variety of trails for all skill levels. More advanced hikers may enjoy the Ak-Sai Glacier hike, which takes around four hours to complete, or the Ak-Sai Waterfall hike, which takes a similar length of time. Those looking for a less challenging adventure can enjoy the river walk. Be sure to bring snacks to enjoy along the way!
