Curator’s statement
For those of us who live with an energy-limiting chronic illness, like Long Covid or ME/CFS (often self-referred to as Spoonies, after Spoon-Theory) Miami can be an ideal and accessible short break destination. With direct, quick flights from the Northeast and Southwest, or a reasonable drive from other parts of the South, it’s easy to get to. Between December and April, the weather is perfectly sunny, with temperatures ranging from the 70s to low 80s and mild humidity — making it ideal for those with temperature sensitivity and/or MCAS. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, striking a perfect balance. And with a variety of hotels, including many at the higher end (which will in turn offer in room air purifiers, portable wellness equipment and other things that we might ordinarily fill our multiple suitcases with), it can also be a less stressful visit. And for the day(s) when you do maybe have more spoons, there are many activities to suit different interests, including beaches, water sports, urban culture, food (and wine!), nature and more —there's something for everyone. I used to think Miami was just about South Beach (which isn’t my vibe), but after visiting twice since I started living with chronic illness (October 2022 and February 2025), I’ve been pleasantly surprised. As a big-city person, I’ve felt right at home in Brickell!

Things to do in Miami

Ideal trip length: 3 nights
For spoonies, I recommend a 3-night stay. I’ve adopted the rule of not staying anywhere for less than 3 nights — anything less is not worth the energy required for packing, traveling and settling into a hotel, and it gives you enough time to recover a little before doing it all again to head back home. The 3-night rule also allows you to have a “low-energy” day and a day to enjoy some activities within your envelope (usually not in that order). So, while I’m offering two options for your "activity day," remember these are just options for flexibility, not for doing them back to back!
Day 1: Boat day
For those who love the water (and who also enjoy peeking at the homes of the rich and famous), I highly recommend a boat tour. There are plenty of options, and some tours even include celebrity homes on Star Island. Check out tours departing from areas like Miami Beach or the Bayside Marketplace for a relaxing day on the water.
Whether it’s a leisurely boat cruise or a private tour, the breezes, views and gentle rocking of the boat can be a soothing way to spend a day. Plus, being on the water is an opportunity to see the city from a completely different angle. The boat trip I took was fully covered (so no need to worry about sun burn or heat stroke) and from what I can see the majority of boats have the same layout.
Note: If you need wheelchair accessibility or other mobility devices let me know and I can confirm with the tour operator that you will be accommodated.Day 2: Self-guided walking tour of Little Havana
Little Havana offers a vibrant cultural experience, and I recommend a self-guided walking tour. I’ve done guided tours in the past, but with limited energy, I found that a self-paced option suited me better. A mix of short strolls and Lyft rides made it a perfect day, and there’s absolutely no shame in taking a break as needed.
Start your day at Versailles, the famous Cuban restaurant. It's a Miami institution and a place where you'll experience authentic Cuban culture. Grab a cafecito (Cuban coffee) and a pastelito (Cuban pastry with Guava and cream cheese) from the walk-up window and sit outside in the courtyard, enjoying the sunshine. The Cuban coffee here is some of the best you’ll ever have, and the atmosphere is unbeatable.
Versailles is located at the far end of Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street), so if you want to explore the monuments and other touristy spots in the area, you may want to consider taking a Lyft back towards the more central part of Little Havana.Or hop on the free trolley service that runs right along Calle Ocho!
After Versailles, if you're feeling up for it, check out some other spots:Le Pub (touristy but reasonably priced, with an outdoor seating area).
Sanguich de Miami (though I had trouble with payments here, it looked promising!)
Party Cake Bakery (try the flan – it's divine!)
Exquisito Chocolate (although they were in the process of moving when I visited, their chocolates are known to be incredible.)
Las Pinareas (fun looking, but sadly crowded with filming during my visit.)
Although I could’ve spent hours at Versailles soaking in the Cuban vibe, I’m glad I ventured further up Calle Ocho to get the whole neighborhood feel!

Need to know
Additional tips for spoonies:
Transportation: Miami has a variety of ride-share services, which is ideal when you need to conserve energy and avoid long walks. Lyft and Uber are widely available. In addition public transportation options include Metrorail; Metromover; Metrobus and Trolley service. These are all accessible but may take a little walk to get to (which may be outside your energy envelope).
Rest time: Don’t underestimate the importance of downtime. Make sure to take a break during the day to recharge, especially if you're dealing with fatigue.
Sun protection: Always keep sun protection handy — a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must, even if the weather is mild. And of course your electrolytes of choice!
Miami may have a reputation for being a bustling, high-energy city, but it also offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation and slower-paced activities. Whether you're into the beach, nature, culture or food, there's something to enjoy at your own pace.
Happy travels, spoonies! 🌞
