Things to do in Italy

Wander through Ortigia

The island of Ortigia, the heart of Syracuse, is a charming maze of narrow streets, ancient ruins and beautiful piazzas. Don’t miss the stunning Duomo di Siracusa and the lively Fonte Aretusa.

Visit Castello Maniace in Ortigia

Located at the southernmost tip of Ortigia, explore the impressive Castello Maniace. This is a fortress with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. With its stunning views over the sea and intricate architecture, it offers a great way to immerse yourself in the island’s past.

Relax on the Beaches of Mazzarò

Located just outside of Taormina, Mazzarò's beaches offer a perfect spot for relaxation, complete with crystal-clear waters and stunning views of the surrounding cliffs.

  • Tip: Stay right on the water at Villa Sant'Andrea, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina Mare to enjoy the beautiful Ionian Sea during the day. Then, take the cable car or the Belmond shuttle up to Taormina to shop, drink and eat in the evening.

Shopping and strolling in Taormina's Corso Umberto

Corso Umberto, a charming pedestrian street in Taormina, is lined with boutiques, cafés and historic buildings. It's the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, shopping for local souvenirs or enjoying a gelato. One standout stop is Managó Ceramiche Siciliane, ceramics shop just off of Corso Umberto. If you spend any time in Taormina, you’ll likely leave with a beautiful ceramic keepsake of your own.

Enjoy an aperitivo at the Grand Hotel Timeo

If you aren’t already staying there, head to the Grand Hotel Timeo in Taormina for an unforgettable aperitivo at Bar Timeo. Set on a stunning terrace overlooking Mount Etna and the sea, this experience is about more than just a cocktail. It’s about soaking in the breathtaking Sicilian landscape. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply indulging in the dolce vita, this is a must-do in Taormina.

Day trips

  • Visit Mount Etna: A must-do in Sicily, Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. There are a wide variety of tours you can join. Explore the mountain (and I definitely recommend a tour as Mount Etna is way steeper than you can imagine). You can hike, take a cable car or visit the nearby vineyards to taste wines grown on its slopes. Whether you choose to explore Mount Etna up close or not, be sure to try some Etna Rosso or Etna Bianco wine while visiting Sicily — these volcanic wines are some of the best in Italy...and maybe even the world!

  • Visit the Archaeological Park of Neapolis: A short drive or 25-minute walk from Ortigia. The Archaeological Park in Syracuse is home to some of Sicily's most important ancient ruins. This includes the Greek Theatre and the Ear of Dionysius. If you choose to walk (like we did), make sure you know your route in advance! Tip: We were able to buy our tickets when we arrived on site, but if going during peak tourism months (summer!), it is best to secure your tickets ahead of time.

  • Boat Day in Mazzarò or Ortigia: For a more relaxed day trip, enjoy a guided boat tour in either Mazzarò or Ortigia. In Mazzarò, explore the stunning coastline and crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. While in Ortigia, take a boat tour around the island to discover its hidden coves, ancient ruins and charming views from the water. Tip: Some hotels include a boat excursion as part of their resort fee! As your travel advisor, I can arrange this plus many other exclusive experiences for you, ensuring a seamless day of fun and adventure.

Places to eat & drink in Italy

In Sicily, it’s hard to go wrong when it comes to food — everything is so delicious. From the freshest seafood to mouthwatering pastas, each meal is an experience. The island’s culinary heritage is rich and diverse, with flavors that will captivate your senses. While you truly can’t go wrong no matter where you eat, below are a few of my favorite spots that I recommend.

Ortigia

  • Scialai: Scialai offers an exceptional dining experience with a focus on fresh, local seafood and traditional Sicilian cuisine. The restaurant’s inviting atmosphere and beautifully prepared dishes make it a must-visit for food lovers.

  • La Vineria Cafe: A cozy café, La Vineria Cafe offers a delightful menu with Sicilian wines and tapas-style dishes. Perfect for a casual meal or a relaxing drink with friends.

  • L'Ancora Ristorante: An intimate and welcoming restaurant. L'Ancora Ristorante serves delicious Sicilian seafood dishes with a modern twist. Known for its exceptional service and fresh, locally sourced ingredients, it's a great choice for an authentic Sicilian dining experience.

Taormina

  • Tischi Toschi: A charming spot serving traditional Sicilian cuisine in a warm, rustic setting. Known for its delicious pasta dishes and authentic flavors, Tischi Toschi is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience true Sicilian hospitality. If you're seated on the second floor, you’ll notice the owner's impressive collection of guitars. He often plays in the courtyard, adding to the restaurant’s unique and lively surroundings.

  • Ristorante Pizzeria Casa Ciampoli: A charming pizzeria in the heart of Taormina, known for its incredible wood-fired pizzas and hearty Sicilian dishes. It's a great choice for a casual, delicious meal with a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Daiquiri: A trendy spot for cocktails, Daiquiri offers expertly crafted drinks in a chic, colorful setting. Perfect for a night out, where you can enjoy unique cocktails in a lively and stylish vibe.

  • Bambar: Famous for its incredible granita, Bambar is a must-visit for a refreshing and authentic Sicilian treat. The almond and pistachio flavors are a standout, offering the perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess. Conveniently located near Managó Ceramiche Siciliane is one of my favorite ceramic shops in Taormina. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a granita after picking out a handcrafted Sicilian souvenir.

  • Gelatomania: A must-visit for gelato lovers, Gelatomania offers a wide variety of fresh and flavorful options. And remember—always get pistachio!

  • Tip: When choosing a gelato shop, avoid places with brightly colored gelato that is piled high — this often means artificial ingredients and preservatives. Instead, look for gelaterias where the gelato is stored in covered metal containers and has natural, muted colors, indicating fresh, high-quality ingredients.

Mazzaro

  • Ristorante Sant'Andrea: Located within the Belmond Sant'Andrea. Ristorante Sant'Andrea offers a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on Sicilian cuisine. The elegant setting, combined with the fresh local ingredients, makes it a perfect choice for a memorable dinner.

  • Armònia Restaurant: Located within the luxurious Mazzarò Sea Palace. Armònia Restaurant offers a fantastic dining experience with a focus on Mediterranean and local Sicilian flavors. Perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner by the sea, with stunning views and exceptional service.
