Things to do in Martha’s Vineyard

  • My ideal day on Martha’s Vineyard is simple. A day spent on Menemsha Beach is ideal for a relaxed family day with calm waters for kids to wade in and plenty of space to spread out. Pick up fresh seafood from the Menemsha Fish Market, set up a picnic on the sand and enjoy the sunset.

  • The Jaws Bridge is one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most iconic spots and a must-visit for families looking for a little adventure. Older kids (and brave parents) can take the plunge and jump into the water below, following a long-standing island tradition. Even if you’re not jumping, it’s a fun place to watch others take the leap, enjoy the scenic views and soak in the classic summer energy of the island. It’s the perfect mix of thrill and nostalgia, making for a great family memory — whether you’re in the water or cheering from the sidelines.

  • Visiting the Aquinnah Cliffs is worth the drive for the incredible views alone. The towering clay cliffs against the deep blue ocean make for a stunning backdrop, which is exactly why we chose it for our family photos. Sunset is the best time to go, when the sky turns vibrant colors and the whole landscape glows. It’s a peaceful, unforgettable spot that really shows off the island’s natural beauty.

  • Oak Bluffs is a great place to explore with kids, especially with its colorful gingerbread houses that look like something out of a storybook. Strolling through the campground is a fun, easy activity, and the whimsical cottages are always a hit. But the real highlight for my kids was the Flying Horses Carousel — the oldest in the country — where they couldn’t get enough of trying to grab the brass ring. It’s a perfect mix of history, charm and fun, making Oak Bluffs a must-visit for families. Finish out your day with a great dinner at Nomans.

  • Another fun stop in Oak Bluffs with kids is the Island Alpaca Farm, where they can get up close with these friendly, fluffy animals. It’s a unique experience that’s equal parts entertaining and adorable — our kids loved feeding the alpacas and watching them roam around. The farm is easy to visit and makes for a fun break from the beach, plus it’s a great way to learn a little about these quirky creatures.

  • Spending time at Lighthouse Beach is a must for the full Edgartown experience, especially with kids. The calm waters make it a great spot for wading and playing in the sand, all with the iconic Edgartown Lighthouse as the perfect backdrop. We like to grab takeout sandwiches from Rosewater Market beforehand, making it an easy and delicious picnic by the water. It’s a laid-back, scenic way to soak in the charm of Edgartown while the kids run around and explore.

  • Renting bikes in Edgartown is a great way to explore with kids, giving you the freedom to cruise past historic homes, scenic harbors and quiet side streets at your own pace. The ride out to South Beach or along the bike path toward State Beach is especially fun, with plenty of spots to stop and take in the views. It’s an easy and active way to see more of the island without the hassle of parking, and the kids love the adventure of biking around town.

  • Martha’s Vineyard is a dream for ice cream lovers, with plenty of spots to grab a scoop (or three) after a day of exploring. From Mad Martha’s and Ben & Bill’s to Vineyard Scoops, there’s no shortage of flavors to keep kids happy. Whether it’s classic chocolate or something more adventurous like lobster ice cream (yes, really), every stop feels like a fun little adventure. It’s the kind of treat that becomes a daily ritual on the island — because let’s be honest, vacation calories don’t count!

Day trips:

A day trip from The Vineyard to Nantucket is a breeze thanks to the convenient ferry access. Once you’re “on island”, there are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy. Children’s Beach is a perfect starting point, with its playground, calm waters and frequent summer events. For more beachside fun, head over to Jetties Beach. The popular Sandbar restaurant lets you dine with your toes in the sand while the kids build sandcastles and you enjoy a refreshing cocktail. You’ll love the cobblestone streets and charm of downtown Nantucket. Before you head back to The Vineyard, don't miss the aquarium. Here, touch tanks and fascinating sea creatures provide an interactive experience for the whole family.

Places to eat & drink in Martha’s Vineyard

Breakfast/lunch:

  • Among the Flowers Café is a charming open-air spot in Edgartown, perfect for a quick and casual meal surrounded by fresh air and island charm. With light, fresh options and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s an easy stop for breakfast or lunch before heading out to explore.

  • Behind the Bookstore in Edgartown is a fantastic family-friendly spot, offering a cozy ambiance and a low-key meal. Parents can also appreciate the adjoining Hemingway Bar for a perfectly crafted cocktail, making it a spot that truly has something for everyone.

  • Rosewater in Edgartown is the perfect stop for fresh, delicious takeout, with sandwiches, salads and baked goods made from quality ingredients. Grab a cold drink and a packed lunch, and you’re all set for a relaxing beach picnic with no hassle.

Lunch/dinner:

  • The Seafood Shanty on Martha’s Vineyard offers a laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere with unbeatable waterfront views. They boast the vineyard’s “largest lobster roll” if you are up for the challenge. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal with a view that keeps everyone happy.

  • The Newes from America in Edgartown has a cozy, old-world pub atmosphere, with low wooden beams, historic charm and a warm, welcoming feel. Their fish and chips are a standout — crispy, golden and perfectly fried — making it a must-try for anyone craving a classic, satisfying meal.

  • Nomans in Oak Bluffs is a perfect spot for a casual, family-friendly meal, offering plenty of space for kids to move around while you enjoy great food and drinks. With outdoor seating, lawn games and a laid-back vibe, it’s the kind of place where everyone can relax without worrying about keeping little ones entertained. The menu has something for everyone, from fresh seafood to kid-approved favorites, making it an easy and enjoyable choice for lunch or dinner.

  • 19 Raw Oyster Bar is a top spot for a date night and my personal favorite. They offer a sleek yet relaxed atmosphere and the best oysters in town, served fresh and perfectly shucked. Since they don’t take reservations, it’s best to go early, especially if you’re with a group, to grab a seat and enjoy their excellent seafood and craft cocktails.

  • Bad Martha’s Brewery in Edgartown is a laid-back spot to enjoy craft beer and fresh-made pizza, with plenty of outdoor seating and a relaxed island vibe. It’s family- and dog-friendly, making it a great place to kick back with a drink while the kids (or pups) hang out in the beer garden.

  • Chilmark Tavern is a true local gem, offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a menu that highlights fresh island ingredients. Since Chilmark is famously known as "the wettest dry town in America," you can bring your own bottle of wine, and they’ll happily serve it to you — adding a fun, quirky twist to an already authentic Vineyard dining experience.

  • The Pelican Club at the Faraway Hotel is the perfect spot to unwind with a creative cocktail and a fun appetizer in a stylish yet relaxed outdoor setting. With its laid-back but chic vibe, it’s a great place for both adults and kids to enjoy.
