While it's true that in general the Gulf countries do get pretty hot June–September, there are a few spots in the region that are actually preferable to visit in the middle of summer! I spent nearly a decade living in the Middle East and traveling throughout the region, and these are my top picks for summer visits.

Things to do in Saudi Arabia and Oman

Taif Region, Saudi Arabia
Nestled in the mountains of western Saudi Arabia, Taif is a haven of cooler weather, fragrant gardens and vibrant cultural heritage. Known as the "City of Roses," Taif is famous for its expansive rose farms that produce some of the world’s finest rosewater.
What to Do:
Take the Al Hada Cable Car, where you may be greeted by monkeys and great views.
Explore AlKamal Rose Factory to witness the production of rosewater and oils.
Discover the Kaaki Palace (sometimes written Kaki), an abandoned palace showcasing Hejazi details and design.
Take a scenic drive along the winding roads of Al Shafa and Al Hada mountains, known for their panoramic views and cooler climates.
Visit the Al Rudaf Park, a large green space with rock formations, walking trails and picnic spots.
If you're there while it's on (usually late August), head to the Crown Prince Camel Festival to see camel races and learn more about these important creatures.
Abha and the Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia
Situated in the southern part of Saudi Arabia, the Aseer (also known as Asir) region and its capital, Abha, offer an incredible contrast to the arid landscapes typically associated with the Gulf. With lush greenery, misty mountains and pleasant temperatures, this area is a must-visit for nature lovers.
What to Do:
Explore Al Soudah Park, home to the highest peak in Saudi Arabia, and enjoy hiking or a picnic amidst stunning views, accompanied by baboons!
Visit the Aljhali Museum, where traditional clothing and ways of life are showcased.
Walk through the Basta heritage district of Abha, where you can try traditional coffee.
Visit the heritage village of Rijal Almaa, renowned for its colorful stone architecture.
Attend the Saudi Flowermen Festival, a vibrant celebration of the region’s tribal heritage, where men don colorful flower garlands and perform traditional dances.
Jebel Akhdar (The Green Mountain), Oman
Jebel Akhdar, meaning “The Green Mountain,” is a part of the Al Hajar mountain range in Oman and offers a cool retreat from the summer heat. Its terraced farms, rose gardens and orchards make it a picturesque and tranquil destination.
What to Do:
Stay in a luxury resort that blends modern comfort with natural beauty, such as Alila Jabal Akhdar or Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort.
Explore hiking trails that meander through terraced farms and breathtaking landscapes.
Visit the ancient villages of Misfat Al Abriyeen and see the traditional falaj irrigation systems.

Salalah, Oman

Explore Wadi Darbat, where you can witness cascading waterfalls and enjoy boat rides in the emerald waters.
Visit Al Mughsail Beach, known for its blowholes and dramatic coastal views.
Experience the Salalah Tourism Festival, which celebrates the region’s culture, food and traditions.
Watch camels swim in the ocean, a unique and fascinating sight along the coastline.
Discover other scenic wadis, such as Wadi Ayn, famous for its striking waterfalls and dramatic rock formations during the Khareef.
Visit Wadi Hinna, known as the "Banana Valley," where you can relax under the shade of fruit trees and enjoy the tranquil streams.
