History
Visit the homes of three of the Founding Fathers:
Thomas Jefferson's Monticello - a neoclassical mansion perched atop a hill.
James Monroe's Highland - Tour the beautifully preserved house and stroll through the picturesque gardens.
James Madison's grand estate, Montpelier - meticulously restored to its 1807 grandeur.
Stroll the historic lawn at The University of Virginia and admire the iconic Rotunda.
Take a walking tour of Charlottesville's historic downtown, learning about the city's role in the Civil War and discover hidden gems like the Edgar Allan Poe Room.
Outdoor Adventure
Hiking is a great way to take in the spectacular scenery in and around Charlottesville. There are a number of trail options for hikers of all levels.
Ragged Mountain Natural Area - featuring over seven miles of wooded trails around the Ragged Mountain Natural Area. Other popular trails include Saunder Monticello Trail and Highland Rustic Trails
Another unique hike that is worth considering is the Blue Ridge Tunnel
Kayak or Canoe on the beautiful Rivanna River, home to countless birds, fish and turtles.
Experience a Hot Air Balloon ride, experiencing the scenery from above.
Vineyards and Wineries Wine Enthusiast named Charlottesville and the Monticello AVA the 2023 wine region of the year. There are over 40 wineries on the Monticello Wine Trail, each easily accessible from Charlottesville. A few local favorites.
Early Mountain Vineyards - Experience locally sourced cuisine and a wine tasting in the beautiful tasting room or enjoy a glass or a bottle on their patio, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Blenheim Vineyards - offers tastings in their tasting room and the chance to enjoy a glass or bottle of wine and views of the vineyard and beyond at one of their multiple outdoor spaces. The winery building, was designed by owner Dave Matthews to have a minimal impact on the environment.
Septenary, The Winery At Seven Oaks Farm - is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The estate is a Virginia Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is an adult only winery that limits group size to 10, leading to a quiet enjoyment of the grounds and tasting room.
King Family Vineyards - is a family-run winery, 15 minutes from Charlottesville in Crozet. Their patio is perfect for picnics and a tasting room with a fireplace is cozy for the cooler months.
Culture and Entertainment
Catch a performance at the historic Paramount Theater or The Jefferson, two venues that have hosted renowned artists over the years.
Places to eat & drink in Charlottesville
Bodo’s Bagels - Excellent bagels and bagel sandwiches. Be prepared for a line in the morning!
Mel’s Cafe provides excellent service and good food in a friendly environment. They serve breakfast all day.
Brewing Tree Beer - Outside of Charlottesville, this brewery offers good beer but Don’t miss the Scratch Kitchen, their food truck out front serving creative and delicious food.
Maya Restaurant offers a friendly neighborhood atmosphere and a unique selection of cocktails and good food.
Duner’s offers fine dining with a great wine list.
Ten Sushi - The Wagyu Japanese Beef roll is highly recommended.
Tavola - A lively neighborhood restaurant offering rustic Italian food, craft cocktails, and a substantial wine list.
South Street Brewery is the oldest brewpub in Charlottesville.
