Curator’s statement

The Caribbean and its many islands are beautiful, with clear turquoise waters and a relaxed vibe. But when you get to live in one of these places, a new appreciation of the depth of the culture forms, and the island's true beauty emerges. Having lived in Barbados for 3 years, I can honestly say it's a gorgeous and interesting island.

Things to do in Barbados

The sunset over a harbor with boats parked in it.

St. Nicholas Abbey: a beautiful historic plantation, with traditionally made local rum, lovely grounds and a Steam Railway to take you around the property.

Harrison Caves: a stunning assortment of stalactites, stalagmites, underground streams and waterfalls, all visible while riding through the caves via tram.

Animal Flower Cave: a gorgeous spot in the northernmost part of the island, where giant cliffs meet the water and underground pools are perfect for a swim— bring your swimsuit and a towel. There's also a restaurant featuring local specialties called the Cave Restaurant.

George Washington House: an interesting historic site in Bridgetown, where the first President of the USA stayed in the 1750's.

Bathsheba Beach: a stunning east-coast beach, lined with rock formations, where the surf is fabulous, with up to 12-foot waves, especially in the winter months.

Catamaran Cruise: there are various catamaran cruises available that include options like lunch, looking for sea turtles, snorkeling, sailing over shipwrecked vessels or just soaking up some sun on the open water. The cruise you pick will depend on what options you choose and where you're staying.

Afternoon Tea: my two favorites are both on the west coast — Sandy Lane and Cobbler's Cove.

Atlantis Submarine: after taking a transfer, climb aboard a real sub (with AC) and get ready to explore the underwater world full of sea creatures and sometimes even a shipwreck! A great family activity with children over three feet tall.

Barbados Wildlife Reserve: a zoo-like experience with a variety of local animals, like deer, peacocks, parrots, reptiles and the iconic green monkey — check for daily feeding times.

Places to eat & drink in Barbados

A sushi platter.

The Tides: The blues of the decor mimic the sea and make this the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal, consistently good with superb service.

Lone Star: Don't let the garage facade deter you from eating at this popular West Coast establishment, where the food and service are consistently good.

Champers: Found on the south coast of the island, it's a great option for dinner with wonderful menu options and a view and the sound of the sea.

The Cliff: Step into one of the most romantic settings in Barbados. Dinner, while pricey, is wonderful and presented beautifully — a great option for a special occasion.

The Fish Pot: Set in the quieter north-western part of Barbados, this tucked-away restaurant on the sea is a local gem with fresh seafood and local cuisine— housed in the former Fort Rupert.

Fusion Rooftop: Asian fusion restaurant found in the Limegrove Shopping Center on the top floor with a contemporary vibe. Outdoor seating is available to enjoy the varied menu, including sushi.

Round House: A restaurant overlooking the ocean on the east side of the island with over one hundred years of history. Great menu of local favorites; try the flying fish or for dessert, the bread or butter pudding.
