Curator’s statement

Tulum is my go-to destination when in the Mexican Caribbean. I love to roam free on the pristine white sand beaches or relax in a hammock with a cocktail in my hand. Whether I’m savoring the flavors at a local eatery, immersing myself in the rich history of the Mayan ruin or simply enjoying the serene coastline, Tulum feels like a sanctuary where every moment is rejuvenating and inspiring. It is a place where I can connect deeply with nature and embrace a slower, more mindful pace of life. Tulum will always have my heart.

Things to do in Tulum

The image shows a scenic beach with turquoise waters, rocky cliffs, greenery, and an ancient stone structure atop the cliff under a clear blue sky.

Things to do in Tulum and near-by

  • Tulum's Ruins are an ancient Mayan city situated on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The Ruin temples are one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. The site opens at 8:00 am. Bring comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunscreen and water. The entrance fee is around 80 pesos per person.

  • Gran Cenote is the most popular cenote located in Tulum. Cenotes are natural sinkholes with clear, turquoise waters, surrounded by lush greenery and cave formations. The Gran Cenote is located about three kilometers (three miles) from Tulum's town on the road to Coba. It offers amenities such as bathrooms, showers, lockers and rental equipment. It is open from 8:00 am until 4:45 pm, but it is best to check in advance as hours may change. The entrance fee is around 300 pesos per person (bring cash).

  • Tulum Jungle Gym is perfect for those who enjoy a great work out with beautiful scenery. It is located beachfront on Tulum’s main beach strip. Tulum Jungle Gym offers memberships or day passes. It is not your typical gym. Its equipment and weights are crafted from natural materials, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. A variety of fitness classes such as beach boot camp, yoga and personal training are available. Classes cater to all fitness levels from beginners to advanced. Operating hours are 9 am to 5 pm with last entry at 4:30 pm.

  • Xcaret Park, a natural water park about an hour drive from Tulum and is one of the most famous eco-archaeological parks in Mexico. It offers a blend of natural attractions, cultural experiences and adventure activities. Xcaret is a must-visit destination for families and adventure seekers. Located on the premises, you can find underground rivers, natural pools, Mayan Ruins, wildlife, snorkeling, cultural exhibits and much more. Packages range from basic admission to Xcaret total. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes, water shoes, sandals, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen (biodegradable), waterproof phone case and a change of clothes. There are a variety of eateries located at Xcaret, such as buffets, snack bars and fine dining. The spa is top-notch and make sure to book your spa under the waterfall. You'll thank me later. The evening Xcaret Mexico Spectacular show is a must. Hours of operation are 8:30 am to 10:30 pm.

  • Xel-Ha is an all-inclusive natural water park known for its large natural lagoon and colorful marine life. The lagoon’s clear water makes it an ideal spot for snorkeling. You can also tube down the lazy river or lounge in a hammock, which I love to do.

  • Cozumel is an island located in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It has some of the most beautiful beaches, vibrant marine life and some of the best reefs. When I visit, I love to rent a car and drive around the island. There are no direct ferries to Cozumel from Tulum, so you would need to take the ferry from Playa del Carmen. Ultramar and Winjet are the two ferry companies that operate out of Playa del Carmen. The ferries run multiple times a day, making it convenient to travel.

  • Tulum Beach Road, also known as Zona Hotelera, is a strip of boutique hotels, beach clubs and restaurants. It’s a great place to rent a bike, roam around. It’s an influencer / creators dream with so many photo ops.

  • Tulum Pueblo is a great place to visit for those that want more of the “local’s” experience. Here you will find markets, shops, hand-crafted goods, textiles and souvenirs.

Places to eat & drink in Tulum

The image shows a circular rust-colored sign with the word “Bardo” cut out, hanging from a metal tripod structure over two potted plants, set against a backdrop of trees.
  • Bagatelle Tulum is a vibrant beach club and restaurant with a beautiful view of Tulum’s pristine beaches. It captures Tulum’s chic Bohemian vibe. Bagatelle Tulum boasts a range of amenities designed to enhance the guest experience. The beach club features comfortable loungers and cabanas, perfect for a day by the sea. The restaurant and bar offers an extensive menu of gourmet dishes and crafted cocktails. Live music and DJ sets create a festive atmosphere, especially during sunset. The saxophone player is a delight to see. The menu features a fusion of French Mediterranean and local flavors with an emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients. Signature dishes include truffle pizza and fresh seafood platters. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a chic, sophisticated escape.

  • La Taqueria de Tulum is known for its delicious, authentic Mexican tacos. You can choose from a variety of traditional options, including tacos al pastor, carne asada and more. Their high-quality ingredients make it a favorite among locals and visitors. The ambiance is very chill and relaxed.

  • La Rosa Negra Tulum is an upscale dining and nightlife restaurant that offers a sophisticated blend of modern cuisine and a vibrant ambiance. The menu features a fusion of Latin American and international dishes, including options like sushi, seafood and steaks. The creative cocktails and extensive wine list compliment the high-quality food.

  • Burrito Amor is a local Mexican restaurant that is dedicated to providing clean, healthy and delicious food. Much of the menu is geared towards a vegan and paleo diet. The burrito is the star of the show, hence the name.

  • Taboo Beach Club is a high-end beach club with a luxurious ambiance. This stylish beach club is the go-to destination for both relaxation and socializing. The cocktails, Mediterranean-inspired dishes and signature complimentary appetizer platter are so delicious.

  • Ocumare restaurant at BE Tulum Hotel is known for its delicious seafood and elegant ambiance. I recommend trying the Ceviches and the Raw Bar. Signature cocktails are made with local ingredients.

  • Matcha Mama is perfect for the health-conscious traveler. Here you can find smoothie bowls, juices, healthy snacks and matcha-based drinks.

  • Heartwood is known for its farm-to-table dining. Hartwood uses local ingredients, and often times the menu will change based on availability of fresh produce and seafood. Offering a unique dining experience each time you visit. The Horchata cake is so delicious.
