Day 1: Settle in With a Bit of True Crime & Local Lore
Afternoon:
Welcome to Firenze, where every cobblestone, every building, every bite can tell tales of history and art. After you settle into your accommodation, let the charm of the city seep in. First, stop at La Nicchietta in Calimaruzza for a glass of wine and a sandwich on Florentine style focaccia, schiacciata, typically thinner and chewier focaccia. My favorite schiacciata was filled with mortadella, stracciatella, and pistachio cream. Italy converted me into a mortadella gal! While schiacciata is sometimes salted today, historically it wasn’t. In 1540 Pope Paul III forced locals to buy salt only from him and raised the existing salt tax simultaneously. He claimed the Papal States needed to raise more money for military campaigns. The cost of salt skyrocketed, and locals refused to pay and declared its independence. As an act of rebellion, they baked their bread without salt.
Evening:
Start your exploration with a touch of mystery. Meet for an evening tour of murders and mysteries throughout the history of the city. Let the winding streets and hidden alleys reveal their secrets of the past as you become immersed in Florence’s own true crime stories. This was single-handedly one of the most entertaining tours I’ve ever been on! On your way home, catch the iconic duomo sparkling in night’s lights.
Day 2: Uncover the Treasures of the Renaissance
Morning:
The city boasts an impressive array of museums, galleries, and churches housing masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli, and Michelangelo. The works of art featured in the Uffizi Gallery and Galleria Dell’Accademia shaped the course of art history. Embark on a guided tour to witness the city’s iconic sites without the hassle of long lines. Marvel at Michelangelo’s David, a masterpiece that embodies the essence of Florence’s artistic prowess. Want to go on your own? Try the Firenze Card for all-inclusive 72-hour access to the most important spots.
Evening:
After a long day of taking in the sights, treat yourself to a night at La Giostra. The atmosphere inside is something out of my dreams - walls lined with aged bottles, ceiling full of twinkling lights, floor to ceiling framed vintage pictures, white-clothed tables surrounded by rosy cheeks, glowing by candlelight. And not to mention the food! Make sure to snag a reservation in advance as this spot fills up quickly!
Day 3: Eat your Way through the Mercato before Leaving with Some Leather
Spend your morning wandering through the bustling Mercato Centrale. Under one roof, you’ll find Italian delicacies to taste, and handmade pastas, sauces, and sweet treats to take home. Dive into the vibrant atmosphere.
Then, outside the Mercato Centrale, right off the Piazza della Signora, peruse the stalls of leather vendors. I’ve been told this before, and I’ll say it again - don’t leave Italy without something luxurious, in leather. Whether it's the shoes, the purses, or a jacket - snag a piece of Florence’s essence to cherish forever.
