Things to do in Málaga, Spain
There are so many wonderful things to do in Málaga. For starters, you must visit the Alcazaba and then hike uphill to the Castillo Gibralfaro. Pro tip: these two sites require separate tickets, so purchase at the Alcazaba ticket office so you don't have to wait in line again at the entrance to the Castillo. Also, arrive early in the morning (before 10 am if possible) to avoid long lines and the afternoon heat. And finally, wear comfortable shoes! The uphill hike takes around 20 minutes and the path is steep!
Another must-see site is the Málaga Cathedral - Construction began in the mid-1500's and was never actually completed. Today, the cathedral bears the nickname "La Manquita", or "The One-Armed Lady" due to the unfinished state of the second tower.
While you're strolling around the city center, be sure to visit the market called "Mercado de Atarazanas" for a wonderful variety of fresh fruit and veggies, fish, meat and other delectables.
Finally, check out the Museo Picasso for an outstanding tour of some of Picasso's greatest works.
Day trips:
I highly recommend a day trip to Ronda to see the famous stone bridge that spans El Tajo, the deep gorge below the city. Our tour dropped us off in town for a bit of exploring, then drove us to the base of the bridge for more amazing photo ops. We also stopped by a spectacular winery called Cortijo Los Aguilares on the way to Ronda, where we experienced a fantastic tour and wine tasting.
A short day trip to Torremolinos is a great idea to find a beach club and relax by the ocean. We visited Silencio Beach Club and thoroughly enjoyed the snacks and drinks, not to mention the gorgeous view.
Other day trips include Granada, Córdoba and, for the adventurous traveler, hiking El Caminito del Rey near the town of Ardales.
Places to eat & drink in Málaga, Spain
El Mesón de Cervantes was hands down our favorite meal in Málaga. The service was excellent and I'm still dreaming about the risotto and the apple tart.
Lola is one of two outstanding restaurants in the Only You Hotel - Come for the delicious food and stay for the incredible view.
Speaking of great views, head up to the rooftop of the AC Hotel Málaga Palacio for a pre-dinner cocktail or snack.
Santa Coffee is a popular (and delicious) coffee spot. There are several locations, including a corner shop in the trendy SOHO neighborhood.
