Let's explore a few of these incredible volcanoes!
Located in the northern part of the country, Arenal Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica, with its last eruption being in 2010. This impressive 5,436-foot tall volcano offers visitors a chance to hike through the lush rainforest, spot wildlife and experience the hot springs in the surrounding area. For adrenaline junkies, there's even an option to zipline over the volcanic area.
In the central region of the country, Poas Volcano is famous for its massive crater, which is over a mile wide. Visitors can hike up to the crater and observe the bubbling pools of sulfur and steam venting. The view from the observation deck is simply breathtaking. Make sure to visit the Poas Volcano National Park for a chance to explore the surrounding areas and spot some of the diverse flora and fauna.
Continuing our trip, we reach Irazu Volcano, the tallest volcano in Costa Rica, standing at an impressive 11,260 feet. This volcano has an active crater with a diameter of over 984 feet, making it one of the largest.
As we head towards the south, we stop at Turrialba Volcano, another active volcano that has been erupting since 2016. The hike up to the crater is not for the faint of heart, but the views are well worth it. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for whitewater rafting, birdwatching, and exploring the nearby coffee
Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is known for its striking landscape of hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles. This active volcano is located in the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, which is also home to numerous waterfalls, hiking trails and diverse wildlife.
