Advisor - Essaouira: Off the Beaten Path in Morocco
Curator’s statement

The last few years, I have been a regular visitor to this beautiful beach town. The beautiful, rich culture of Morocco mixed with the beauty of the ocean makes for a wonderful escape for a weekend or for weeks. To anyone visiting Marrakech or a similar location, I highly recommend taking a day to explore Essaouria. Even if you aren’t interested in the water sports that dominate the beaches, there is something for you in this city.

Things to do in Morocco

Water sports

Essaouira has a windy climate, which makes it a popular destination for kite surfers. It is the perfect place to learn the sport as well, if you have always been interested in it. The prices are better than trying to learn in Europe or other countries. Several kite schools line the beach walk. You can stop in an ask what the price is for a lesson and see if they offer packages for several lessons during your stay. You can trust that they will take care of you during your time in this windy city, whether it’s a long stay or a short one.

Explore the Medina

The Medina is the old walled city, part of Essaouira. Here you will find several shops selling souvenirs and other unique goods. During the day, it is fun to browse all the shops and barter if you find something you like. It’s all very colorful and there is so much to see. Luckily, Essaouira is small, so you can’t truly get lost in this little Medina. Explore the Jewish Quarter, the kasbah and so much more!

Quad or horse tour along the beach

Many people come to Morocco to see the desert. But you don’t have to go all the way out to the Sahara to find a desert experience. In Essaouira, you can take an hour or day tour through the dunes that look like the desert! There are several tours on Quad bikes or on horseback, depending on what you prefer! If you have time, this is one of my favorite things to do in Morocco.

Hammam

A spa experience unlike any other. Book a luxury hammam experience and get exfoliating scrubs and relaxing baths. After a long day in the sun, nothing sounds more relaxing, no?

Places to eat & drink in Morocco

Chez Omar

Excellent prices and authentic Moroccan food. Several other restaurants in this area will have the most authentic food as well

Chez Miloud

Moroccan crepes are unlike any other crepe you will have in Europe. They are delicious and filling. Once again, the outside of the restaurant may not be grand, but the food will not disappoint! Order your crepe with honey, cheese, meat or whatever else sounds good!

Mandala Society

A cafe that appeals more to the tourist but has great value for the food and the coffee. I like to sit at the window and watch the main street while I enjoy a tea or a coffee. Cash is king! Take out some Moroccan dirhams or have your own currency on hand to pay

L’Espirit

Another lovely coffee shop, more hidden from the main street. You will see several cats bathing in the sun beside you as you enjoy your coffee.

La Coupole Essaouira Beach

Perfectly placed on the beach, you can enjoy a meal and a view of the sunset.

Munchies

In case you want a familiar taste, this is the best burger and milkshake you will find in Essaouira. It is located near several kite schools if you want to ask about lessons for the next day!

Need to know

I felt extremely safe traveling as a single woman in Morocco. It’s always good to use caution and general common sense when traveling.
