As a former Washingtonian, cherry blossom season was always a favorite time of year — a sign that winter is over and the city is coming back to life. Despite the crowds, it’s a magical moment worth experiencing. Peak bloom is expected in the last week of March into early April. Things to do in Washington, DC

  • Tidal Basin cherry blossoms - This is the most famous spot to see the cherry blossoms right next to the National Mall. It gets extremely crowded during the weekends and afternoons/evenings during peak season. If you want to enjoy this spot without the crowds, I highly recommend waking up early and watching the sunrise (~7 AM) at the basin before heading for breakfast. Peak Bloom: March 28th to 31st.

  • Arboretum cherry blossoms - If you want to escape the crowds, the US National Arboretum near Ivy City is a great place to see the cherry blossoms. They boast over 400 acres of green space and have 70 species of cherry blossom trees. The arboretum is open from 8 am to 5 pm every day and is free entry. If you want to avoid the Tidal Basin crowds, this 3.2 mile look with blossoms is a perfect spot.

  • Artechouse Blooming Wonders - Artechouse is an interactive exhibit where art and technology meet. Their annual Blooming Wonders exhibit is an exhibit to celebrate spring and a tribute to DC’s cherry blossom season. March 7th through the end of April.

  • Blossom Kite Festival – A vibrant display of kites takes over the National Mall, creating a colorful spectacle in the sky. This annual event invites participants of all ages to bring their own kites or watch expert kite flyers perform stunts. March 29.

  • Petalpalooza – A family-friendly festival featuring live music, interactive art, hands-on activities and a stunning fireworks display over the Anacostia River to close out the night. April 5.

  • Cherry Blossom Festival Parade – A lively parade along Constitution Avenue with giant helium balloons, elaborate floats, marching bands and entertainers celebrating the arrival of spring in DC. April 12.

  • Sakura Matsuri Street Festival – The largest Japanese cultural festival in the U.S., spanning multiple blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue. Enjoy traditional performances, cultural exhibits, Japanese food vendors and interactive experiences. April 12–13.

Places to eat & drink in Washington, DC

Top of the Gate, Watergate Hotel

  • A Baked Joint - One of my personal favorite breakfast spots in DC. They have creative menu items, Baked & Wired Cupcakes (without the insane Georgetown line) and one of the best dirty chai lattes in the city.

  • Call Your Mother - There’s a reason this place has been visited by past presidents and always has a line. If you want a great bagel sandwich and some coffee to start your day, this colorful shop is sure to do the trick.

  • Duke’s Grocery - Is it a DC recommendation list if you don’t include a bottomless brunch? This British stalwart has multiple locations around the city boasting bottomless mimosas bloody mary’s and beer for $26. Enjoy a proper English breakfast with your pint to start the day.

  • Ambar - A great option for brunch or dinner, this restaurant boasts unlimited Balkan cuisine and drinks. Make sure to come hungry because you’ll want to try everything.

  • Oyamel - Very close to the National Mall, this Jose Andres is my staple for friends when they visit. The small plates meal is so fresh and when paired with their salt foam margarita, it’s a perfect option for lunch or dinner.

  • Filamena - Tucked in a basement in Georgetown, you’ll be able to find this restaurant because of the woman in the window making fresh pasta. As you step down into another world you’ll be able to indulge in some impeccable Italian cuisine

  • Red Light Bar & Detroit Style Pizza - Craving a thick slice of pizza? Red Light has some great Detroit style pies right on 14th Street making them a perfect spot for a bite before or after a few drinks.

  • Aslin, 14th Street - Serving up coffee in the morning with local craft beers and natural wine in the afternoon, this beer garden is a great place to start or end your night.

  • Capo Deli - A deli in the front and a party in the back. While you could grab food from the counter, I prefer to go through the walk-in door into the speakeasy in the back. With good drinks and music, the space is a great place to enjoy a night out right on U Street.

  • Top of the Gate - The rooftop cocktail bar offer, in my opinion, the most beautiful view of DC. With light bites and cocktails, it’s the perfect place to catch a sunset over the Potomac River. Make sure to make your reservation in advance.

Need to know

Beyond the cherry blossoms, DC offers endless things to see and do. Explore the city’s vibrant culture, kayak along the Potomac, enjoy the incredible food scene or dive into the world-class (and free!) Smithsonian museums. If you can’t fit it all in one trip, it’s well worth coming back.

And don’t forget to take advantage of DC’s efficient public transportation — add your Metro card to Apple Wallet for easy access.
