Curator’s statement
If you're planning a trip to Greece, chances are you'll spend a day or two in Athens before setting off on your island or mainland adventures. While Athens is often overlooked, I believe it’s one of the greatest cities in the world. After all, you're walking through history itself — history that's been documented in countless books across the globe. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant local culture, and I highly recommend staying near the Acropolis for the ultimate immersion in both ancient and modern Greek life.

Places to eat & drink in Athens

Veal from Daphnes
For a memorable dining experience, try Dopios for a taste of modern Greek cuisine, and don’t miss Tou Psara in Plaka for fresh, delicious seafood and local food. For a laid-back brunch, Urban offers a cozy atmosphere and a fantastic menu. Cafe Boheme Mpampagiannis is another great spot for a relaxed vibe and tasty food (great dinner spot). For cocktails, head to Clumsies — ranked among the top 50 bars in the world and a favorite of Gordon Ramsay. If you're seeking a Michelin-starred experience, Spondi delivers exceptional fine dining. For something more traditional, Daphne’s is a wonderful choice, serving classic Greek dishes with a local touch.
Need to know
Like many popular European destinations, it's always a good idea to stay mindful of pickpockets — especially in crowded areas — so be sure to keep your phone and wallet secure. If you're exploring the islands, you'll notice that many souvenirs can be priced higher, so if it’s not something unique to the islands, I’d recommend checking out the Athens flea market for better deals. When visiting the flea market, it's best to bring cash and embrace the fun of bargaining for the best prices!
