Day 1: Colosseum, Campo de Fiori, Pantheon & Trastevere

Clear blue sky above Colosseum.

Morning

Start your day at the Colosseum, arriving at about 8 am if possible to avoid the crowds as well as the heat if you’re visiting in the warmer months. Purchase tickets ahead of time to skip the line. The Colosseum is one of the most iconic symbols of ancient Rome. It is the largest amphitheater ever built and served as the epicenter of Roman entertainment, hosting gladiatorial contests, public spectacles and other events. Take advantage of a guided or audio tour that will provide detailed historical context, stories of the gladiators and insights into Roman life.

Adjacent to the Colosseum is the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. The Roman Forum was the political, commercial and judicial heart of ancient Rome. It housed important buildings such as the Senate House, temples, and public spaces where critical decisions were made. Palatine Hill is one of the seven hills of Rome and is considered the birthplace of the city. After enjoying the architectural and historical highlights, be sure to take time to enjoy the extraordinary view from Palatine Hill, looking over the Forum, Colosseum and modern Rome.

Lunchtime

Take a break for lunch in Campo de Fiori, a bustling hub of activity, frequented by tourists as well as locals. Campo de Fiori is renowned for its daily market, one of the oldest in Rome. Surrounding the square are numerous cafes, trattorias and bars where you can enjoy a meal while soaking in the lively environment.

Elle Effe Restaurant is a great choice, offering pasta and pizza among other delicious dishes and a good wine selection.

Afternoon

After lunch, take a short walk to the Pantheon. Originally built as a temple to all the Roman gods, the Pantheon has been a significant religious site for nearly two millennia. Admission is free.

After leaving the Pantheon, take a stroll to Piazza Navona, famous for its Baroque fountains and lively atmosphere. Enjoy a gelato at one of the nearby gelaterias. Be sure to stop and admire the Trevi Fountain. While you are there, throw a coin into the fountain, ensuring that you will someday return to Rome.

Dinner

Enjoy dinner across the Tiber River in Trastevere. This charming area is known for its cobbled streets, lively atmosphere and authentic Roman cuisine.

Alle Fratte Di Trastevere is highly recommended. Their pizza, pasta and tiramisu are all incredible.

Day 2: Vatican Museums, Via del Corso, Spanish Steps & rooftop dinner

People walking towards St. Peter's Basilica, a large domed building between two streets.

Morning

Start your day early at the Vatican Museums, which house a vast collection of art and artifacts, including Michelangelo's masterpieces in the Sistine Chapel. Be sure to book your tickets online in advance, as this is a popular attraction with long lines.

After the museums, visit St. Peter’s Basilica. While there, be sure to view Michelangelo’s Pietà and climb to the top of the dome, where you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city.

Lunchtime

Enjoy lunch at Ristorante Arlù, an elegant option just outside of Vatican City that offers seasonal and traditional Roman food.

Afternoon

Head to Via del Corso, Rome's famous shopping street. This pedestrian-friendly street is lined with international brands, Italian designer stores and affordable high-street shops. Whether you're looking for luxury items or souvenirs, this is the perfect location.

Take a short walk to the Spanish Steps, the stairway that connects the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti. Relax at a café near Piazza di Spagna, people-watch and soak in the ambiance.

Dinner

Enjoy a final meal at a rooftop restaurant with a beautiful view of the city such as La Fata Ignorante. End your evening with a leisurely stroll, enjoying the city’s nighttime charm.

Helpful tips for your 2 day Rome itinerary

Purchase a Roma Pass if you plan on visiting several museums and attractions. This pass provides free entry to the first two ticketed venues you visit, as well as unlimited use of public transportation.

Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for some hills.

Learn a few basic Italian phrases before you go. While most tourist destinations will have English-speaking staff, it is nice to know a few common phrases.

Be aware of dress codes for churches, including St. Peter's Basilica and the Pantheon.
