Advisor - Finding Harry Potter: Edinburgh and Oxford
Curator’s statement

For true fans of the Harry Potter book series and movies, a trip to Edinburgh to see the Edinburgh Castle, to sit in The Elephant House where J.K. Rowling wrote the first book, to take a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train, to visit filming locations in Oxford and to tour the Warner Brothers Studios is a truly magical experience. With good planning, you can enjoy Edinburgh for a few days, take a day trip toward the Highlands to ride the Jacobite train (aka Hogwarts Express), then finish the week with a train ride down to London, which will be your hub for exploring Oxford and the Harry Potter filming locations (plus, of course, a Warner Brothers Studios tour). This is a perfect trip for families with kids of all ages.

Things to do in Edinburgh and Oxford

  • Edinburgh Castle: One of the most historic sites in Europe. A tour with a guide will provide you with historical background that will add depth and meaning to your visit. The stunning views of the castle on top of the cliff evoke all the Harry Potter vibes.

  • Greyfriars Kirkyard: The names on the tombstones in this graveyard will sound familiar to Harry Potter fans... names like, William McGonagall, Robert Potter, Elzabeth Moodie and of course, Thomas Riddle. This cemetery is believed to be the inspiration behind Godric's Hollow.

  • Grassmarket: This busy shopping street will bring to mind Diagon Alley. Located off of the Royal Mile, this street is a perfect place to shop, eat and take photos on one of the most photographic streets in Edinburgh.

  • J.K. Rowling's handprints: Located in the flagstone in front of Edinburgh City Chambers, you can see J.K. Rowling's handprints in stone.

  • George Heriot's School: This school located in Edinburgh has Gothic architecture and is thought to be the inspiration for Hogwarts. A good view of the school can be seen from the George IV Bridge.

  • The Balmoral Hotel: Request Room 552, and you can sleep in the room where J.K. Rowling completed the last scenes of the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The room has been named "The J.K. Rowling Suite" and offers a full Harry Potter experience.

Day trips

  • Jacobite Steam Train: A full day trip from Edinburgh will take you to Fort William where you can board the Jacobite Steam Train (aka the real Hogwarts Express). Travel round-trip to Mallaig along the sea, and return to Edinburgh the same day with your guide. Cross over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which famously appears in multiple Harry Potter films. The train runs from April to October, seven days per week.

  • Oxford: Travel to Oxford to complete your trip. Many filming locations from the movies are located in Oxford, including the Bodleian Library, New Colleges Cloisters and Christ Church.

  • Warner Brothers Studio Tour: No Harry Potter trip would be complete without a stopover at Warner Brothers Studios London. Plan on spending an entire day seeing the actual sets used in the films, authentic props, original costumes and more.

Places to eat & drink in Edinburgh and Oxford

  • The Elephant House: Enjoy coffee or tea in the room where it happened. Known as one of the best tea and coffee houses in Edinburgh, this is where many authors have written their most famous works, including J.K. Rowling. The Elephant House is called "The Birthplace of Harry Potter."

  • The Cauldron: This immersive bar invites guests to participate in "potion-making" and offers both alcoholic and alcohol-free options. Family friendly time slots are available.

  • The Witchery: Located in a 16th Century building, the space now hosts a hotel and restaurants just outside the gates of Edinburgh Castle. You can have afternoon tea or a two-course lunch. The ambiance is historic and indulgent.
