Curator’s statement
This beautiful national park called South Luangwa National Park, features this. The riverside is where you can witness laughing hippos, cape buffalos, birds and giraffes, lions, leopards and elephants being seen on land in a typical savannah setting. You can experience it all: safari activities, the lagoons and the Luangwa river, where its shores nestle by your camp lodge. South Luangwa National Park in general is Zambia's gem. The campsites cater for luxury stays, giving it more of a personal touch where you get a chance to go on walking safaris and seeing wildlife at its core. What makes this park convenient is the location by Mfuwe Airport, which is complete with customs and immigration easily accessible from Lusaka and Lower Zambezi. You can also connect with the local villagers. Primary schools are just by the park gates, and many tour operators send their proceeds to keep the schools open and sustain the community's needs.

Things to do in South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park is a massive area to do many activities. Get to know this amazing park, dotted with unique animal sightings. Spot Zambia’s beloved Crawshay’s zebra herds (whose stripes are more distinct than those found further south and west) and 14 different species of antelope. The Big Four (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard), apes and Elephant and Cape buffalo are plentiful. Even you can spot a white Rhino roaming by the thick thorn trees whose existence does not have the threats of poaching like many parks in Africa.
For the more adventurous activities at South Luangwa National Park, you’ll want to pack your binoculars and camera to capture your sightings. This park offers day and evening game drives, which is a unique safari opportunity for the ultimate experience of excitement. Walking safaris are also optional with many tour operators. Our Fora DMCs offer a chance to walk around the river, grasslands, lagoons and swamps. Boating allows a glimpse of other animals like hippos, water buffaloes, aquatic birds and crocodiles that can be spotted on shore.
Another notable area of the park is the remote Muchinga escarpment. It acts as a physical barrier to many of the park’s animal species. Species like the elusive hartebeest, sable and roan can be found if you explore that area with a guide.
Best time to visit this park is based on the seasons. The best time for watching wildlife in South Luangwa National Park is during the dry season, which takes place from July to October. The Luangwa River becomes a gathering place for animals during the dry season. They emerge from high-temperature bush areas in search of the refreshment of the river’s clean water.
April to October is great to see the thick bush thin out and wildlife is easier to spot. Animals will gather around the river, and this is the best time to spot the more elusive species on your list. Expect bright days and lots of sunshine. Less chance of malaria, since there are fewer mosquitoes, but river areas can be more crowded. So keep that in mind.
Places to eat & drink in South Luangwa National Park

Dorphil Restaurant: Dorphil is a small side-of-the road type of restaurant that is small and has a good mix of local and European food. The Nshima (thick corn porridge) that can be scooped with chicken and fish is the best. A bit out of town on the road to the airport, Dorphil serves a variety of foods that also include BBQ, Pizza, spring rolls, German style foods, sandwiches and fruit cups with desserts.
