Things to do in Panama

Panama Canal – Miraflores Locks
Watching massive ships pass through the locks is mesmerizing! There is an entrance fee, but when in Panama... it’s a must-see! Before heading outside, you’ll walk through a museum that details the canal’s history and construction.
Insider tip: Skip the museum at first and go straight to the locks for the best view. It can get crowded — ships typically pass between 8–10 am and after 2 pm. Once you’ve watched a ship go through, head back inside to explore the exhibits. With its fascinating engineering and global impact, it’s no wonder the canal is considered one of the world’s greatest man-made wonders!
Explore Panama Viejo (the Ruins) – The original Panama City
Step back in time at Panama Viejo, the first European settlement in the Pacific, founded in 1519. Destroyed by the infamous pirate Captain Morgan in 1671, its ruins now offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Wander through the remains of this historic city and imagine life centuries ago.
Insider tips: There are public washrooms and a café on-site. Bring an umbrella or visit in the early morning — the sun can be intense! Don’t miss the museum, where your teens will learn about Spanish architecture, daily life, pirate attacks like Henry Morgan’s raid and how the city was rebuilt after its destruction.
Wander through Casco Viejo — The historic heart of Panama City
Step into the past in Casco Viejo, a beautifully preserved colonial district and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its lively plazas, colorful streets and stunning architecture make it a must-visit. As you explore, you’ll find charming cafés, unique boutiques and rooftop bars with breathtaking views of the modern skyline.
Insider tips: Many churches are welcoming to visitors, though some may request a small entrance fee or donation. Expect a strong police presence around the presidential palace, and some areas may be restricted. For happy teens, stop for ice cream at Granclement, a local favorite with delicious, handcrafted flavors!
Stroll or bike along the Amador Causeway – Panama City’s scenic boardwalk
Enjoy a walk or bike ride along Panama City’s iconic boardwalk, a lively waterfront stretch with stunning views of the city skyline and ships heading to the canal. Along the way, you’ll find local vendors, restaurants and the famous colorful "Panama" sign — perfect for photos!
Insider tips: Rent a bike for a fun way to explore the area! There are plenty of food carts, but for a teen-approved treat, grab a fruit smoothie or raspao (Panamanian shaved ice) from a street vendor to cool off. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
Peacock bass fishing & Monkey Island adventure – Lake Gatun
Ready for an unforgettable two-in-one adventure? Book a private trip with Gatun Sportfishing — a full-service experience where you won’t be crammed onto a boat with strangers. Their new boats ensure a smooth ride as you head to Lake Gatun for an epic fishing trip. Cruise alongside massive ships navigating the Panama Canal while casting for peacock bass — an exhilarating experience our family loved so much, we did it twice!
The real highlight? A stop at Monkey Island, where curious capuchins might climb onto your boat and howler monkeys roar through the jungle. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and wildlife!
Insider tips: The marina is about an hour away from Panama City, so you’ll need to arrange transportation in advance. You can Uber or arrange a ride with Gerardo, the owner of the fishing company. You don’t need to worry about lunch — the guide provides beverages and snacks, but make sure to pack sunblock. I suggest extending your adventure by staying a night or two at Gamboa Rainforest Reserve to explore nature trails, spot exotic birds and fully immerse yourself in Panama’s lush jungle. The hotel is rustic but well worth it for a night!
