Bourbon Barrells
Curator’s statement

As bourbon's popularity is growing, so is its fanbase. Bourbon isn't just a man's drink anymore, which is why I jumped at the chance to create the perfect four-day Itinerary when my sister-in-law suggested a couple’s trip to Louisville. While bourbon tasting was the main objective, a visit to Louisville isn't complete without a trip to Churchill Downs, a visit to some amazing restaurants and a stay at some of the best hotels. Most distilleries require a reservation ahead of time to book a tour or experience, so let me help you plan.

Day 1: Arrive in Louisville

Michters Bar Cocktails

Arrive early in Louisville to make the most of your first day. Start off with some of the distilleries in downtown Louisville. Angels Envy, Peerless, & The Buzzards Roost are all excellent choices for a tour or tasting. If you don't want a tour or are unable to reserve one, make a visit to one of the bars at Rabbit Hole, Michter's or Old Forrester for a flight or cocktail.

Check into your hotel and get ready for dinner at Proof on Main followed by a fun evening at Hell or High Water speakeasy. Be sure to check out the art at Proof on Main and 21c Museum.

Day 2: Experiencing Bourbon

Buffalo Trace Water Tower Day

Grab some breakfast at J. Graham's Cafe before you head out for a day of touring. Rent a car or book a tour and make your way to some distilleries where you're sure to see some beautiful landscapes along the way. Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Castle & Key are a few that I suggest. While Buffalo Trace is wildly popular, they are one of the only distilleries that do not charge for their tours. However, you've got to be quick to reserve your tour when they open up dates on their website.

When you’re ready for lunch, check out The Stave. The Fried Green Tomato Pimento Grilled Cheese and the Pickle-Brined Fried Chicken Sandwich were both hits with our group. If you’re up for it, they have a large selection of Bourbon flights and cocktails as well. After your day of Bourbon tours and tasting, make your way back to Louisville to prepare for an amazing dinner at Riverside Restaurant & Raw Bar. While seafood is their specialty, there is something on the menu for everyone. If the weather is nice, be sure to request a seat on their patio so you can enjoy the river views with dinner.

Day 3: More Bourbon

Makers Mark Barrel with Staves

Take another leisurely drive today to Makers Mark Distillery and Bardstown. Maker's Mark Distillery is a great place to spend part of your day. Take a tour of this beautiful distillery, grab a bite at Star Hill Provisions & check out their gift shop where you can even dip your own bottle!

Bardstown has a historic downtown that is great for walking off lunch and a little shopping. Visit The Blind Pig Bourbon Market to pick out some local bourbons to take home. Or you can visit one of the many distilleries in this area, such as 1792, Heaven Hill & Lux Row. Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, head back to Louisville for dinner at Le Moo. If it's your birthday, you can even get a discount equal to your age!

Day 4: Last Call

Churchill Downs

Spend your last day in Louisville taking in a few of its iconic sites, such as Churchill Downs. There are many tour options, but I highly recommend booking a morning Barn & Backside Tour. There were only 6 of us in our group and we had an amazing time touring through the stables and around the track. Also be sure to visit the museum before or after your tour for a great history lesson at Churchill Downs & horse racing.

For lunch, take a break from Bourbon and opt for beer instead at Bluegrass Brewing Company. You can have a flight of beer and partake in a Louisville tradition, The Hot Brown. After lunch, take a walk around the Ohio Riverbanks. If you have time, you can even walk across the river on the Big Four Bridge, which will take you to Indiana!
