Curator’s statement
Siem Reap is an unforgettable stop to add to your travels in Southeast Asia. This was a place that had been on my photography bucket list for a long time, and I couldn’t have asked for more. Exploring the ancient wonders of Angkor Wat gave me a captivating introduction to the heart and history of Siem Reap through its rich culture and welcoming people.

Day 1: Siem Reap
Nestled in northwestern Cambodia, Siem Reap is a captivating destination steeped in history and culture. Well known as the gateway to Angkor Wat, the city is a tapestry of Khmer architecture, bustling markets, and warm hospitality. Siem Reap has evolved from its humble cluster of villages to a center that features a mix of colonial-era buildings, contemporary structures and nearby ancient temples.
Exploring Angkor's Majesty
Set aside at least one day to explore Angkor Wat and the other memorable temples in the area. I highly recommend having a dedicated guide so you can explore at your own pace. While it was an early start, I began my journey watching the sunrise overlooking Angkor Wat, the sense of peace it brought was unforgettable. As the sun casts its first rays on the temple's intricate spires, you'll be transported to another time. Spend the morning exploring the temple's awe-inspiring architecture. After a break for breakfast, head to Banteay Srei, Ta Prohm (you might recognize this one from the movie Tomb Raider) and Angkor Thom. It’s a full day, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated!
Day 2: Local Exploration
If you are up for a second active day, take a boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake to witness the floating villages. Otherwise, start your morning by taking a leisurely stroll to the Old Market, where you’ll find a vibrant produce market and many stalls with textiles and souvenirs to take home. During your exploration, indulge in a hearty bowl of Khmer noodle soup or Amok, a delicious fish curry cocooned in banana leaves.
To round out your trip, take in a dinner show at the Apsara Theater, one of the oldest in Siem Reap. The intricate costumes and dance movements tell a story that takes you on a journey through the region's cultural heritage via Khmer traditional dance (cushioned floor or restaurant-style seating are both available with a reservation).
Need to know
Things to note:
Don’t be surprised when you see pricing on most things listed in US Dollars.
While shopping, a lot of local vendors can be negotiated with, but be aware that only crisp US bills will be accepted if you’re using them. Worn or slightly torn bills can be rejected.
Most countries in the nearby region will not convert Cambodian Riels to their currency so plan accordingly.
