Things to do in Amsterdam
Marvel at the Festival of Light
Every winter, the city transforms into an open-air gallery as artists from around the world create mesmerizing light installations along the historic canals. You can explore it on foot, by bike or during a canal cruise. I would highly recommend a canal cruise for the full effect. You can join a group tour or book a private outing.
Visit world-class museums
Rijksmuseum: One of the most architecturally stunning museums in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum cannot be missed. Amsterdam being home to Dutch native Rembrandt, his collection at the museum is extensive. For me, the real gem of this museum is its breathtaking library. If you are a book lover, don’t miss this stop.
Rembrandt House Museum: The Rijsmuseum isn’t the only place where you can immerse yourself in the world of Rembrandt. For a more intimate experience, head to the townhouse, where you can see works of art and also learn painting techniques from artists on site at the museum.
Anne Frank House: Visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam is a profoundly moving experience that offers an intimate glimpse into history. The secret annex, where Anne and her family hid, is meticulously preserved. Allowing visitors to step back in time and feel the weight of the stories told within its walls.
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: From iconic pieces by Van Gogh and Mondrian to cutting-edge installations and thought-provoking exhibitions, the museum showcases the evolution of art across centuries. Its innovative approach to blending visual art, design and architecture makes it a unique cultural experience.
Eat stroopwaffel at the Christmas Village
Each year, the Museumplein turns into a winter wonderland. This is probably one of my favorite areas of the city to find festive cheer. Surrounded by some of Amsterdam’s most beautiful museums, you can spend an afternoon walking around the twinkling lights. Keep warm with hot cocoa and a Dutch classic, the Stroopwaffel.
Warm up in the sauna
Sauna Deco is one of my favorite places to unwind in Amsterdam. The beautiful art-deco architecture makes the space unique and transports you into a different world. In the winter months, the sauna and steam room are an oasis to the frigid temperatures. Don’t forget to book a massage!
Explore Amsterdam’s unique neighborhoods
Negen Straatjes: The Negen Straatjes, or Nine Streets, in Amsterdam exude charm year-round, but they feel especially magical in December. This picturesque district, with its narrow cobblestone streets and historic buildings, is adorned with festive lights and decorations that create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Small boutique shops, cozy cafés and unique artisan stores offer a perfect blend of holiday shopping and relaxation.
Red Light District: Visiting Amsterdam’s Red-Light District is a fascinating and unique cultural experience. It offers insight into the city’s progressive and open-minded ethos. Walking through its historic streets, you’ll find a mix of vibrant nightlife, centuries-old architecture and a community that embraces diverse ways of life. It’s a place that challenges perceptions and invites visitors to immerse themselves in a different perspective. Making it an essential stop in understanding the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
Jordaan: The Jordaan neighborhood in Amsterdam is a delightful escape, known for its charming streets, historic canals and vibrant local culture. It offers a truly authentic experience, with a distinct neighborhood feel that draws you into the rhythm of everyday life. What makes it truly special is its culinary scene, offering an array of cozy cafés, artisanal bakeries and authentic Dutch eateries.
